Trunk latch is constantly releasing...

So I found my mini with a dead battery last week, and after recharging the battery I'm finding my trunk release is constantly opening. I can hear a relay clicking somewhere near the right rear wheel well, but I'm not sure if it's related (it seems to click both when the latch randomly opens, but also when it doesn't).

Even with the car completely shut off this will continue until the battery is dead.

Has anyone had a similar issue before? Any idea what it might be?

the clicking near the right wheel well is most likely something to do your fuel pump and is normal.

now, are you saying that it is releasing by itself?

If your car is still under warranty you should take it in. The dealer may have a tough time trying to duplicate it so it may help trying to find out if it happens only when the car is on or both when on and off. The more info you can get on it the better since it may not happen when you take it in. Good luck with it!

It actually seems to happen only when the car is off (I left it on outside for about 10 min and it never unlatched. As soon as I turned it off and locked it, I heard the trunk unlatch before I made it inside.

The latch on my 2009 convertible's trunk would sometimes have a mind of its own. I would hear clicking noise behind the right wheel well as I believe that is where the relay is located. Dealer found that one of the limit switches in the latch was just barely making at times. They replaced the latch under warranty and the problem was eliminated. Good luck.
