Strange noise... : /

I have a 2005 6 speed S with 79,000 miles on it. No mods.

I drove to Tulsa (about 100 miles away) and pulled into an IHOP to use their free wifi and while I was in the mini, idling with the heater on, out of no where came a constant.... buzzing.... humming.... type noise. I don't know how to describe it exactly, I will try to record it sometime but it's random. I though it was a fan maybe so I shut off my climate control. No change. Thought it was engine related, revved the engine a little and no change. Thought about all the horror stories I've heard about the power steering so i turned my wheel, the noise changed. It has something to do with my PS I think. But i couldn't find anything quite like it on here. It doesn't' stay on after the car is stopped. It only comes up at idle. if i start driving after it's started it will go away somewhere down the road, because it's gone next time I idle. It is really worrying me. REALLY!

Anything will help.

Fluid is full. I checked it immediately.

I had the same thing happen to me today for the first time. 2010 MCS with 23,000. It's almost a vibration and only at idle.

Yes, I have solved the issue. I completely forgot about this thread as it did not get much response it was not on my mind long at all.My sound got progressively more frequent until it was making the noise more often than it wasn't. I took it to the dealer and had them diagnose it, they are great here in OKC and did not charge me. The culprit was the power steering fan, like gray raven said, but it was not gummed up or did it have anything stuck in it that I could see. I purchased a new power steering fan and installed it in literally 7 minutes and the sound has been gone since. Part cost $189.00 from the dealer, you can find it for around $150.00 elsewhere. Two 13mm bolts (if my memory serves) and a plug later all your strange noise woes are behind you and it is all happy motoring from there!
