Does anyone know what part this is?

I recently did an oil change myself, and I thought I did everything right but I thought wrong.

The oil light came on after driving my car back from being parked, and I could see that my car was leaking oil badly. I saw the following part had fallen onto part of my front subframe and luckily had gotten lodged in there.

Is this supposed to go where the oil filter housing is? Is it from something else?
Hopefully someone can shed some light on this, I couldn't find it on realoem.

The diameter of the circle on this part matches the diameter of the plastic ring on the oil filter.

The top part of this part rotates around the bottom half, the bottom half has two plastic clip looking things opposite each other.

Help me please!

Well, I found out the O-ring on my filter housing had busted, even though it was a new one and I had oiled it and all.

Still doesn't explain this part though, anyone know where it's from?

Lol That is a throwout bearing for your clutch. I assume you didn't accidently remove your transmission during the oil change, right?

It must have been from a previous clutch change and a forgetful mechanic.

FlzRider, you are absolutely right.

I had my clutch swapped out under warranty close to 2 years ago, I can't believe I had been driving with that thing resting underneath my car for so long! I can't believe the bmw techs left it there!

A new rubber ring was 11 bux...kind of ridiculous when it costs 22 with the filter.

If you install the canister at the specified torque, the "O" ring won't brake; I don't remember how many lb/sf but you can find on on the canister. I learned the hard way, I dumped almost all the oil once. I bought a torque wrench right away!

Seriously right? I should buy it from you and return the o-ring to them, they didn't have a box or anything they handed me one from the bin...

Man, how do you fit a torque wrench in there? I could barely fit the socket and my smallest socket wrench.

Perhaps a long extension to bring the torque wrench up and out from behind the motor.

tight the canister by hand, put the socket in first, then attach the wrench to the socket. I think there are low-profile sockets available too. I used a regular socket though.

Whatever you want to do.

You don't need a torque wrench, just snug it down, they tend to get tigher anyway with the heating and cooling of the engine.
