Spark Plug Ignition Coil Rust/Corrosion
Spark Plug Ignition Coil Rust/Corrosion
I tried to post a new thread for this, but the site seems to be having issues with that. Discovery was related to this carbon buildup & seafoam experiment, so please bear with me...
-------
I've heard it said somewhere before that you should replace your spark plugs after doing a big Seafoam treatment.
Now, I'm no car expert, but this doesn't look very healthy.

(cylinder #2, if you count from passenger to driver side… don't know if that's correct counting, but that's how I'm going to define it)
That was the worst of them. Cylinder #1 was about half as bad, and cylinders 3 & 4 were very minimal.
A couple questions:
1) should I replace only the coils that look bad, or should I do all 4 at the same time?
(seems obvious I shouldn't just leave it the way it is)
2) what's a good way to clean out the cavity the coils fit in to? do I need to?
(it's difficult to see clearly down that hole with how reflective the surface is, so I can't tell if the buildup is limited to the coil or not)

FWIW, just checked my coils, they have none of that corrosion...I'm just under 50k.
That note at the top was something I added when I posted it over here (NAM wasn't letting me post a new thread last night, but worked this morning). It should've been removed here, but I forgot (and am leaving it now so this exchange makes sense
). The intent was to say the question was loosely related to the Seafoam work I had been discussing earlier in that thread (and could be argued on-topic, given the new thread difficulties).I discovered the corrosion because I went to change the spark plugs after experimenting with Seafoam this past weekend. I wouldn't have gone to touch that plugs if I hadn't, so it would have remained undiscovered. That's all.
It appears to be just a bit of surface corrosion/rust...at this pint I doubt it is affecting anything...keep an eye on it...check the gasket at the top...
The problem on gen1 cars is very different...so when reading about sparkplug/coil corrosion remember to pay attention to the year car...
