Windshield washer / wiper movement

Okay...here's a very weird question.

When you wash your windshield using the pulling action of the wiper stalk and the windshield fluid squirts out...do the windshield wipers come on automatically?

Our Mini was in a recent accident where there was an electrical issue and when the body shop worked on it they couldn't find it so they towed it to the dealership here in Indiana and they couldn't find it either.

however now we notice when you pull the wiper stalk the fluid squirts BUT the wipers don't come on...you have to manually turn them on...I don't remember this being this way but I don't know for sure...

Anyone have an answer on how their Mini works?

We've got a 2005 coupe.

THANKS in advance!
Joe.

Yes if I give them a longish pull the wipers will come on with the washer. If I give it a short pull it just sprays the window a bit.
