Then today, went out at 65 mph on a curve. Definitely got my attention. Since I've got an '02 with 78K on it, I guess I have to be ready for a few repairs. Love the car - replaced the P/S fan last summer. It is definitely giving me pause as I contemplate buying another MINI - especially living so far (275 miles) away from a dealership.

I may have to put my Bentley's book to use!
I know thank God, er, Bentley for the Bentley! I would check and make sure that the fan is working. If you plan to replace the pump, make sure you buy the Pentosin power steering fluid at the same time as the pump. They dont sell it anywhere near likely. What made you replace the fan?

I'm planning to take it to Ralph Schomp in Denver on Monday - was planning on having it serviced/inspected there anyway. I replaced the electric radiator fan and the P/S pump fan last year - overheating was the electric fan problem. I don't remember what happened to the P/S fan - just remember they told me be glad it was the fan not the pump. :( Gotta say, I still love my '02. It's in beautiful condition. I've tweaked the heck out of it. Body and interior are super. I have two sets of rims for winter/summer. I can't imagine turning loose of it. Just hate the thought of costly repairs.

Make sure your fan is running before you have to end up replacing your $700 pump + installation. start the car and turn your A/C on and look to make sure your regular radiator fan is running then slip your hand under the car where the fan is (pretty much in the middle) and you should feel the fan running. if its all working your probably going to end up replacing it. If you have to I suggest BBA remanufacturing, I have had to replace it twice but other than that you will have to fork out $700 for a brand new one.

if you need any tips ask away!

So it might just be the powersteering fan? When PS shuts off, i have to turn the car off and then back on.

Well its possible, but just do that quick troubleshooting and let us know.. If it is the fan, then you can replace the fan and pray that the ps pump not working is a cooling issue and not a permanent but intermittent damage from the fan not working issue.

if it turns out to be the pump then you still needed to replace the fan. So no money lost.

Im hoping for ya!

Is the power steering fan working when the low speed fan is running? I mean if all the fans are working the PSP is intermittent your going to *probably* end up needing to replace the PSP because the only other thing 'as far as I can think' that could be malfuctioning, is the PSP.

np, I am also very new, Just this power steering junk has been really nagging at me... No, it should not be running all the time. I am looking at the Bentley and according to the wiring schematic, it seems like it should be running when the low speed fan is running. some people say when you put the A/C on it should work, idk mine doesnt. and I know for a fact the fan works, so its a mystery to me, I may hook up a light to the negative side of the fan and wire it back to the cockpit so the little light will light up when the damn thing goes on

ok i did everything and the PS fan does work! When i took my car in 9k miles ago, the shop noted that my power steering reservoir hoses were leaking, exactly which hoses do i need to buy and is this a difficult DIY project?

good and bad, that means likely the PSP is on its way out :( I hope Im wrong but theres really nothing else unless the electrical connections are somehow loose, but thats a stretch, they made the connectors pretty well...

The resevoir hoses, hmm well you need to pull the PSP for that bad boy. Typically the non pressurized one goes (i know thats odd) if the high pressure one went you would already have had to do it because you would have lost your steering. the non pressurized one is a straight length of regular hose (not sure what size) .. evacuate the resevoir of fluid (make sure you get a liter of Pentosin BEFORE you change them because its not available in most places. I had to get mine on ebay) disconnect the hoses at the top, then pull the PSP, replace the hose(s), replace the PSP and done. It looks like a lot of work butyou can get it done in a few hours even without a lift, get some ramps and a LOW creeper.

MINI has an extended warranty for the PS pumps in Canada!

There, even IF already been replaced / installed by a MINI dealer a reimbursement program is set up....So why has MINI owners in the USA been negated from that same "courtesy" ?

So, my 2002 MC had the power steering fail this morning and I finally got through this 12 page thread just now.

can anyone tell me and or show me a picture of where the steering control module fan relay is? Also, is the power steering cooling fan relay the same thing?

Thanks,

Mike

Took it to the dealership last weekend. The SA there advised that I replaced my Power Steering Feed and Return Line. I guess even the mighty GP falls at the hands of the Power Steering Crisis.

I have an 05 MCS with 106k and power steering is starting to fail, I don't like how the steering changes while driving. Started doing this yesterday. Purchased car used almost 7K miles ago.
Any way of being able to remove the PS and go manual?
My old Honda doesn't have PS and actually like it.

Looks like MINI is finally going to help us in the US and will offer reimbursement for you if you paid for it yourself
