Replacing ECU Unit with Used one

Replacing ECU Unit with Used one
I think my ECU unit is bad.
My car has been just shutting down with no warning. The BMW shop I took it to believes the same thing. The dealership is pricing $1800 for a new unit. I have found used ones on ebay for much less. But the shop thinks that you can't replace a car with a used unit (based off what BMW experience).
So my question is can you replace a bad ECU with a used ECU unit without any issues? or am i screwed?

A used unit will not be programed to work with your car and be useless.
