How new a motor will fit?
Hi all
I've got a 2003 S that has 99,000 miles. I can see needing a clutch and a supercharger in the near future.
My thoughts are, if the motor has to come out to replace the clutch and most of the front end has to be removed to replace the supercharger, why not just find a complete low mileage motor and swap it out.
So, how new of a Mini can I get a motor from? Is it 2007?
Will the newer Turbo Motors and trans fit?
Anyone else done this type of swap?
Any problems?
Thanks
Zig

Putting in a new SC is easy...service mode....
Installing a new clutch...you have to drop a subframe, and the tranny to get at the clutch.
You could put a cabrio motor in...the SC one...
The turbo...lol...don't make me laugh.
The problems start with physically making it fix, and end with making it run...the computer. On old, non computer controlled cars, it might work, but on a modern, highly engeneered car, run by computers, it would be a major project. More than most anybody without limitless funds could do....

Thanks for the reply Zip.
I didn't think the turbo motor would fit but had to ask.
Getting a Cabrio motor is a great idea I had forgot about.
With 99,000 miles, I just feel the motor it self is running on borrowed time and labor cost shouldn't be that much more to replace the whole motor compared to replacing the clutch and supercharger.

for the money I would get a heat, and do other "freashening" of the current one.
99,000 miles ia nothing, on a modern car! How's the compression? You can check it yourself or have a trusted mechanic do it for you. A supercarger rebuild and a clutch will cost you way less than a new engine!
You can put any new engine in your MINI, it just depends on how much money you have. The bigger departure from stock the more money it will cost.

204,000 miles?
That sounds great.
My 88 Corvette had 182,000 miles on it when I sold it in March.
But I didn't think the 4 cylinder would hold up that well.
I was originally to the believe the whole motor had to be removed to change the clutch. If the cross member can be dropped and only the trans removed, that sounds a whole lot better. I'd heard prices in the 2,000 to 2,400 dollar range for a new clutch installed. How much with only dropping the trans?
Thanks
Randy

I have 180K on my saturn with no major repairs only a few bolt ons
same with my 141K suburban. No trouble with 53K on the MR2 either.
I ask as I am new to the MINI if there is something inherently bad about the Gen1 design or significant issues with longevity. I honestly did not think to look at that in detail before I bought based on my understanding (very general) of the modern car.
The min has a lot going for block...cast alloy iron..very sturdy!! Bottommend is strong too.
The head...not perfect...no alminiuim head is...electronics are ok...but pretty good car overall.

A Motor is way to expensive to replace unless it is dead.
2nd the motor doesn't come out to do a clutch. some people do it that way but it takes longer.
3rd the new motor definetly won't fit. If you want a "new" motor we can just order one from MINI. They remanufacture the R53 engines. You don't have to order one for a newer car, just order one for your VIN number.
