Question about exhaust on 2005 MC
Question about exhaust on 2005 MC
I was looking under the rear bumper and I saw that the large piece that the tail pipe comes from is deteriorating. By that I mean it looks like the tin that is molded over the the strange shaped large piece is crinkling and sparse in some areas.
I've been to the forum and looked at what the exhaust consists of on the 2005 R50. I've called to see if I can have mine looked at. What is this piece actually called and does any of this sound familiar?
I'm assuming that if there is deterioration where the tail pipe exits and also on this piece, there must be deterioration further up toward the underside of the engine.
And, assuming I need to replace the whole exhaust system what would your thoughts on that, be.
Thank you so much.

Here's a picture of what it is. I'd like to know what the large piece is called. And,, it looks to be encased with metal which has peeled back in some areas. I can't get a decent pic of mine.
Also where the small tail pipe extends out is corroded, where it connects just under the rear bumper. Am wondering if it's unthinkable for me to sand the corroded area of the tail pipe, use muffler cement, and perhaps be able to let it go for a while.

The small pipe that extends to the rear is the 'exhaust tip'. If there is corrosion near the tip, it's probably harmless, unless it is rusting through the metal.
Muffler cement may not adhere to the stainless steel metal but it is worth a try for little expense. This may be a short term fix...
I would recommend you visit a local and reputable muffler shop to see what they say - an estimate shouldn't cost you anything. They may be able make repairs by welding the seam on the muffler.
Check this list to see if you have a MINI club in your area, MINI club members are usually very helpful and may be able to recommend some shops in your area.
Good luck!
