Great Service, New Problem - Cruise Control

Hello all!

2 weeks ago I posted a thread about my 08 MCS not starting and asking if anyone knew about problems with the clutch start switch. Well thanks to the local Birmingham dealer that problem has been resolved. They replaced the CSS, the clutch master cylinder and the slave cylinder. I have 60k miles on my 08 MCS so it was not a warranted item. However, after a bit of talking they agreed to pay for all the parts and labor! Bravo! The real kicker... I bought it from a different dealer in a different city.

Talk about corporate support and standing behind your product. Very Nice!

Now for the new problem. After picking it up and driving home today I tried to engage the cruise control. The light comes on but the CS never engages. I phoned the dealer and they knew of no reason why the cruise control should stop working after replacing the master and slave cylinders.

So... has anyone here heard of similar issues and had a similar tale? I travel a good distance daily and rely on the CS heavily so I would love to get this resolved.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Yes,

And to answer the OP's question. It is probably the clutch enganement switch for the cruise control. With all the work they did they either did nto get the switch back in correctly or did not plug the harness back into it.

Under normal conditions when the cruise is set and the clutch is depressed the cruise is disengaged. If the switch is open all the time (indicating a depressed clutch) the system can not be engaged.

Take it back and have them check it out.

Agree with Shatzy .... anyone who doesn't believe dealing with the brakes or the clutch will affect the Cruise Control just isn't thinking clearly. What happens when you're in cruise and you tap the brakes? The cruise dis-engages ... voila, they are connected.

Hmmm maybe programing? Also hope I mean hope your SZL module didn't crap out cause that thing is expensive an involves replacing the steering column. Trust me I am trying to hook up MFSW in my MINI and I am about to take the plung and spend the money

Is there more than one switch on the clutch pedal, or does one switch do double duty for the cruise control and the starter interlock? If there is only one switch, you should be able to troubleshoot by attempting to start the car without engaging the clutch (make sure you're in neutral before you try this). If the starter engages, your switch isn't working properly.

Doubt it is the SZL module as it turns on the cruise just will not let you set a speed. Or according the OP that is the case.

The dealer did a lot of work on the clutch pedal and master cylinder and that would be the first place to look.

There are 4 wires on the Clutch switch module. Wiring diagrams I have do not show what each is for but I would be willing to bet one is for starting and one is for cruise as they perform different functions.

Its always a possibilty. It probably isn't though but keep that in the back of your mind if they can find what is causing it. The damn ECU in the MINI can be ignorant some times and start doing strange things when you fix stuff.

The starter interlock requires pressing the clutch pedal all the way to the floor; the cruise should disengage with even a light touch. It should be more than one switch, unless it is a single sensor that detects position.

I agree with rkw. I don't have a manual Cooper, but my BMW does disengage the cruise with a light touch of the clutch.

You don't have a clutch. Do you mean the brake?

Nope, the clutch on my manual BMW.

This is right from the WDS for the R56:

WDS Wiring Diagram System Clutch module

On vehicles with manual transmissions, the clutch module at the clutch pedal picks up the clutch position (clutch pressed: clutch switch open; clutch not pressed, clutch switch closed). The clutch module consists of a clutch switch and an electronic evaluation unit.

This tells me there is two operating states the computer can detect the clutch has been pressed and clutch as been pressed all the way to the floor with the clutch switch.
