2009 MCS - clicks, then acceleration
2009 MCS - clicks, then acceleration
Background:
-------
I had a weird noise coming from somewhere in the engine bay, but only between 2500 and 3000 rpm. Took it in to the nearest MINI dealer and after looking it over they said it was a leaking AC hose that would resonate at that frequency. They ordered the replacement hose, and I went back just this past weekend to have them put it in. They did that *and* they put in the cold start fix (said the service tech was hearing that problem). I get the car back, all is well, and I'm happy as a clam.
Problem:
-------
Since that service this past weekend, when I hit the gas (say, accelerating up a freeway on-ramp, moving to change lanes without slowing down the guy coming up from behind in that lane, etc.), the car won't give me any power right away. Instead, I hear about 5 or 6 clicks in rapid succession (a sort of ratcheting noise) coming from somewhere near me and to the lower right (maybe behind the center console, under the stick shifter, something like that), then after the 0.5-1 seconds it takes for these clicks to happen, I'll get the power I was expecting and everything feels fine.
What I know:
-------
Apart from the weird clicks, it feels almost like the computer has kicked in and is limiting the throttle for a moment. The car is stock, apart from a hard-wired radar detector (not likely related).
This has happened maybe 3 times since Saturday. I don't know if this happens every time I am in a situation as described above, or is reliably reproducible in any way. I just haven't had the time to experiment with it yet.
The nearest MINI dealer is 100 miles away. I intend to take it in to them soon, but I want to try and collect as much information as possible and experiment with it as much as possible so I can make the trip count (already gone up there twice this month to fix that AC hose thing).
Question:
-------
Does anyone else out there know what I'm experiencing?
Have you heard of anything like this before?
If not, do you have any suspicions as to what it might be?

Your engine is knocking under boost - the computer detects this and retards timing to reduce the risk of detonation which could punch a hole in a piston - you experience power loss - knocking or pinging is caused by too lean of a air/fuel mix
