Well I have started having my first MAJOR problem with my car. It has the dreaded sunroof sticking when its hot problem. Is there a fix for it really or am I just stuck dealing with this?

 

This happens to me too. I push up on the glass while I hold the toggle switch. That usually gets it to open.

I'll start by saying that this is my first post, I hope you find it helpful. I had a similar issue with my 09 Clubman and took it back to the dealer I purchased it from for service. Unfortunately it still hung up, and kicked back on a semi-regular basis. I decided to try another alignment with Prestige Mini of Mahwah service dept., and it hasn't hung up or kicked back once since then. So I'm not sure if the alignment procedure is super precise or if I just got lucky. But it does seem possible to get it aligned properly.

 

It's kind of happened to my 09 Clubman the past couple of really hot Texas days. The first time I try to open the sunroof, it tries to open but stops immediately. The 2nd attempt always works though.

 

I've had the sunroof fix applied and it still sticks as well.

 

Have my appointment scheduled for Friday. I have talked to a mini tech who did say there is a TSB related to the fix and to go ahead and take the car in. He did say though that the fix came out in like Oct of last year after it had gotten cool again so he wasnt 100% confident on the fix. It also sounded like it could be a multiday/stage process even resulting in removal of the head liner etc...

 

I've had that problem right from day one, it took 12 "re greasing" and 2 years of complaining. They finally put a new one in, Problem solved.

Onefish2 has the solution in the second post. Push up on the sunroof with your index finger while you activate the toggle. Or park in the shade.

 

In my opinions, there is no real fix to this problem; thermal expansion, use of four bar linkage near its dead space, and engineering tolerance should have been given considerations when designing the Cooper roofs. They did not. The problem should have been caught during engineering verification and validation prior to production. Again, they did not conduct thorough testing on the design or at all. The reality work around solution to this is to open it in two consecutive steps; first toggle the 4-bar (the roof) out of its dead zone (roof slightly open), then open the roof out as much as you want.

 

Mine has been fixed four times. It still sticks.

 

Looks like mine has been fixed but I am watching it.

 

Known fix. Protruding hardware. Dealer will fix with different hardware.
It's 102.6 outside right now. Works fine.

 

my sunroof does this sticking crap too when its hot out. ugh.

 

Been adjusted five times and lubed with "Special Mini Lube". Still sticks. Also rattles in the winter. It's at the dealer right now to look at it again. Plus in for the second time for timing chain rattle and the intake is getting "carbon blasted". I would like to activate one touch open but I'm afraid I'd burn out the motor.

 

Mine's been adjusted 3 times and it still sticks. I'm not sure there's a real solution, but sometimes people seem to get lucky with various types of "fixes".

 

+1 this works great!! On toggle a little at a time and it opens up!!!

 

I had mine fixed last year and it has been good since. They removed the entire sunroof and installed a new surround and mechanism. It is apparently made of different materials that don't expand so much with heat. I guess since they are designed in Europe where it may not get as hot, they didn't get it right the first time.

 

Interesting! Thanks for the info. Why they still haven't realized/fixed this for all new MINIs in so many years is silly...but that's the way it is.

 

I just bought my 07 MCS used , and it should still have a yr left on the warranty. I'm going to take it in to get checked and see what they say... I don't want to have to always Jimmy it to open!!!

 

Do it. They didn't even hesitate to get it sorted for me at Nick Alexander Mini in Los Angeles.

 

Stuck sunroof with 15,000 miles on Ericka. Nearly opened sideways. Brought it in and they replaced the entire sunroof cassette including the frame and motor. Works perfect now.They said without warranty would have been in the neighborhood of 2K to repair. Needless to say, I just purchased an extended warranty. Man oh man, these MINI's are EXPENSIVE on repairs.
