We need a few more details. Such as, if you've got an automatic trans; it could be ATF. Also could be power steering fluid. What year MCS? How many miles on it?

its a 2003 MCS manual. has 56 000 miles. My power steering pump is on its way out, but that has been leaking a black/brownish colour.

What does the fluid feel like? Watery or a lubricant?

At first glance, it could be power steering fluid. The color could change because there is less on the floor, and the floor reflects white. Easiest way to tell is to check the fluid level in the reservoir. It's the black round container at the rear of the engine compartment.

It could possibly be transmission fluid. Color very slightly resembles it. New fluid should be dark pink in color. Most newer manual transmissions use the same fluid as an automatic one (as opposed to gear oil, which is the same as what goes into the rear end in older cars).

If your brakes feel softer, it could possibly be brake fluid. Check the reservoir at the fire wall right in front of where the driver sits. There should be an indicator window on the side of it.

It could also be engine oil. That's a given... check your dipstick.

Any local shop should be able to at least tell you what it is when your MINI is placed on a lift. I doubt they would even charge you for five minutes of their time.

Could be.... take a good look at the at the expansion tank, it might have a crack in it. It will leak right onto the exhaust = the brown water look & feel....
