how to change a marker light?

hello all

dumb question, but I need to change a marker light on my '03 MCS and I couldn't see how to get the bulb out. I did get the connector off (as well as some skin off a few knuckles), but how the bulb itself comes out was not obvious to me.

any help appreciated!

cheers

greg v.

Another one the mini engineers should be soundly beaten for ....

Once you get the wheel well liner removed, you can access the marker light from the rear. The socket holding the bulb turns lefty loosey I think, then you can pull the bulb/socket out.

There is a rubber o-ring on the socket, that seals it inside the housing. Depending on how old it is, it can be quite hard to loosen.

The bulbs in the running lights (pictured in the first post) and in the wheel arches are 194 style wedge bulbs. Pull them straight out (no twisting).

Oops, yes. The bulbs pull straight out. I thought he meant the bulb housing, sorry.

I thought it was a no-brainer to simply pop the grill that the light is in out of the body panel. No need to reach behind the body panel.

It definitely is done from behind, not sure if BMW was thinking this would deter theft or what.

hi guys

after more skinned knuckles (and a healthy slather of WD40) the light popped out no problem, and it was definitely from the back.

Off to Canadian Tire to get some bulbs.

thanks!

ok, now I am a bit confused on exactly what type of bulb I need.

Per rkw's post above, the 194 seems to be a direct fit, however the local Mini parts guy said I needed a 797 (or something like that), while the parts counter guy down the street gave me a part number for a W5W 20-2812, and I've also found a listing on-line for a 2825.

Are these all the same bulb?

The owner's manual simply states that it is a 5W bulb.

I am embarrassed at how long this is taking me to change a bulb....

any (more) info appreciated!

greg v.

EDIT: looks like the 194 bulbs I got locally are 4w, so I need to track down some 194 style 5w bulbs...

194 is the bulb style (apparently), and is available in 4w and 5w, as I have discovered.

edit: just got a pair of bulbs from the dealer, they are marked W5W9L1.
