Major problem regarding oil.

Ok. I changed the Oil like 12.000 km ago. I am going to change it the day after tomorrow. I open the hood. check the dipstick and no oil showing. My face: :scared::scared:
Is this normal or what? I put Castrol Edge 5w-30
I havent had any problems with the car. It runs smooth. Hope nothing is damaged.

I would expect any normal engine to consume a quart of oil every 3,000 miles or so. I think that is about 5,000 km.

If you fill it up and it runs fine, you may not have damaged anything, especially in a colder climate.

What about volcanic ash? I think that would be a bigger worry.

Seems like your oil pan gasket is busted and leaking oil. A common issue.

How much did you have to add to be "full" on the dipstick? if only a quart or even two, you're probably OK. Any more that 2 and I'd start to worry a bit more.

I bet you will remember to check your oil regularly in the future. The mini may be able to go many miles between complete oil changes, but it still requires regular replenshiment. If the oil light ( low preassure= oil starvation) never came on, you should be fine...perhaps the oil ran a bit hotter, or the remaining oil had to run a lot harder, meaning you might have a trivial amount of extra wear, but IMO no worries.
One tip...if you have euro castrol edge (considering your location you should), us market castrol edge does not meet mini/BMW oil specs.

Well, the car is a US spec and I used the euro Castrol. Is that bad. What should I then use?

No, you used the right stuff....you just need to check it more often and top it up from time to time, that's all......

The oil you used is fine. Better than fine actually
I guess you found the reason your car is low on oil.
If it is the oilpan gasket...it is a common leak
Replacement is pretty involved, most likely more than a beggining do-it-yourselfer would want to do. Possible, but a pain by most accounts.
I am glad to hear you found the scource of your low oil situation...it sucks that it is a leak, but the bright side is that you are not likely burning oil.
