r56 power steering assistance loss

I bought my 07 Mini about a two months ago and love it.

Around a month after I got it I had my first problem. I started the car and got the yellow steering wheel warning and found the steering assist was gone. I shut it off and started it again and it was fine. Since then it has happened once in a while but I noticed it was getting progressive. Now I get the power steering to work maybe one out of five restarts.

I live in Central Pennsylvania, an hour north of Harrisburg. The nearest dealer is three and a half hours away.

Is there anything I should look for to fix this myself or do I need to take it to a dealership? Is it a loose wire or maybe a bad ground? Anybody else run into this problem?

If it is still under Warranty call MRA and have them Flatbed it to the Dealer, there is no reason for something like that to go out in a 3yr. old car.

Let us know what happens and Good Luck!!

Steering

I wish. It has 69000 miles on it. Plus I am still 3+ hours from the nearest dealer. Would it hurt anything to drive it without the power steering?

Not sure...but if it hurt anything, I think it would be your arms that are going to feel they are falling off once you get tho the Dealer...Sorry Man, this Sucks, I really feel for Ya'!!

I might still try and see if MiniUSA can do anything for you, Halve that Flatbed Rate, I don't know, but again this isn't something that should be going out on your car.

Is anybody here from Central PA or know of any garages that will actually work on Minis? I talked to one or two dealerships in the area and they said they don't have any equipment or knowledge to work on them.

I found a video on Youtube from a person with the same problem.

Is this something that can be purchased and fixed by a DIY'er? Anybody have a good parts dealer for this part?
