Engine Buzz??
Engine Buzz??
Quick question to see if any one else has had this situation.
I have 1400 miles on the new S. When I accelerate hard to above 4500 rpm in gears 2-4 and then let off the gas there is a very loud buzz (sounds like a bunch of pissed off bees) that is much different from the engine noise itself. Heat shield loose ??? The noise doesnt seem to be present when I do the same thing below 4500 rpm, which is throwing me a little bit......
I have an appointment with the SA to take a ride this Saturday but figured I would bounce it off the forum to see if anyone has any ideas.
Other then that love the car!!

Not to say that you don't have a real problem because that is quite possible, but these cars are buzzy, vibration filled, noisy cars. Everything buzzes and makes noise, the motor is loud, etc. Its just how nit is and it adds to the personality of the car.
I had something similar in my MCsa at just over 3K rpm on hard acceleration. Took it in, and the dealer diagnosed it as "harmonic noise maker faultily attached to bulkhead" and noted that they repaired it.
No more buzzing sound.
Good luck!

I have been searching through the forums, and all I can find is cold start chatter/ noise issues..
It appears I finally found someone with the same problem I seem to be having!!
However, I have a 2007 MCS with 45k miles........ and I didn't renew my service contract after 36k miles...
What have you found out about this issue??? Is it something I will have to pay a ton to get fixed??
Thanks!

Hey RilianMini,
I took a ride with two SA's, both mini owners, over the weekend. I was able to duplicate the noise. However they did say that it was a normal mini sound, and there was nothing to do to fix it. I figure I'll wait till a mini event and give one of the local long time mini owners a ride just to be sure.
Sorry not much more help. I'll post back if I hear something else.

Turbocharged MINIs have a blow off valve (most turbos have them). It makes a buzz or hissing sound immediately after you lift off the accelerator - particularly if you are accelerating a tad aggressively. You can really hear it in a convertible with the top down. It is hard to hear in a MINI hatchback.
If the turbo didn't have this as soon as you let off of the throttle the air leaving the turbo would have no place to go and the turbo would take longer to spool up once you have shifted and are going for the next gear.
If it is the blow off valve the buzzing only lasts a second or so.

might want to check out that thread, I am pretty sure that both of our cars are making the same noise... and it is only under higher boost levels
