I tried to start my car and it wouldn't. The YELLOW icon with a steering wheel and a padlock showed. The manual said to move the steering wheel (it was not locked at all) and try to start again. I did and the first could times it wouldn't start (and the light went out). But the third time it did and it's been fine. Anybody else have that happen to them? Thanks in advance.

 

These electronic steering column locks were problematic in early E90 3-series BMWs, which came out in '06. After '06 or '07, they solved the problem the easy way - they eliminated the lock altogether. Mini did the same thing.. not sure when, but my '10 does not have the lock.

Based on what I recall from owners' issues with the E90's, this may be a one-time thing that never recurs, or you might need to have some work done. Might be worth having the dealer have a look at it.

 

It has no happened again to me. Hopefully it's over with, I'm out of warranty lol.
