glove box chrome

The chrome laminate on my glovebox latch has started peeling from the bottom and is razor sharp. Still under warranty but dealer believes the repair is to replace the entire glovebox. Wouldnt be a problem but I have a bunch of wiring (ipod, playstation, xm, etc) wired through the glovebox itself which i would have to remove in order to get it serviced.

Anyone have a possible alternative fix (or also have this problem)? I could possibly file it down, glue it, etc.
thanks

I've got a bad spring on mine (door wants to pop open on bumps) - the only replacement part available is the whole assembly, possibly because they come from an outside supplier who doesn't offer individual parts.

To answer your last question: yes. (get creative: sand it smooth and paint/vinyl to match your interior, body color, dash color, wife/girlfriend's eyes) OR go w/ the warranty offer, those can be hard to come by from MINI ...

Thanks for the reply and suggestions.
I am going to swing by the dealer to see what they think. If they are going to replace it under warranty perhaps they will let me just exchange the part and allow me to do the install on my own time. Crossing my fingers on that one.

What came about this? Do you have to change the entire glove box door to change the handle? Mine is also peeling :(

Clear packing tape over the handle to keep the edge from peeling maybe? Erm, kind of like a vinyl wrap for the handle, but it is packing tape.

I believe that for 1st gen MINI's, the only part that's still available, is the entire glove box assembly.

glovebox replaced

It ended up needing an entire glove box replacement. Fortunately, i was still under my initial warranty, dealer didn't have any issue covering it. Also, hats off to the new Raleigh, NC dealer, since i had a bunch of wiring going to my glovebox (aftermarket, xm, ipod, playstation, etc) they let me just swap parts and install it myself.
