Steering Angle Sensor Failure?
On my 2004 MCS, anytime I turn the wheels hard right while rolling at slow speed, I immediately trip the ABS, DSC, and tire pressure warning lights. They'll reset after a restart but trip again on my next hard right turn.
From what I gather, this sounds like some kind of wheel speed sensor or steering angle sensor problem, but since it occurs consistently while turning, I'm thinking it almost has to be the steering angle sensor. Make sense? Fixable by mortals or best left with the dealer?

There are quite a few bits that need to be taken off to get to the sensor. For most people, I would recommend a pro. The part is around $300 from MINI, but I have one if that is what you need. Let me know if you want to try yourself and I'll give you more info.

Thanks Greg. I ended up going to the dealer and they replaced left front wheel sensor. Before going, I pulled the sensors, cleaned them up, and blew out the openings with compressed air, but the fault returned. The dealer writeup said "...pulled faults to find code 5e5c l/f wheel speed sensor fault... speed sensor failed internally".
I was originally quoted $800+ as the probable cost to replace the steering angle sensor. I suppose I should feel lucky I only paid $387+tax for the wheel sensor replacement. The sensor was $173 which seems borderline ridiculous for something that I can get the exact same part mail-order for $55. This means it probably costs the dealer $45 or so for essentially a 4x markup. I'm Okay with paying for good dealer service, but this seems out of bounds.
I've been resisting buying a code reader but if there is a reasonably priced one which would give me which sensor failed, I think I'll get it - I could have fixed this myself for <$60. If I get the same problem again, I'm just going to take a flyer on a $55 sensor and hope for the best.

glad you got it sorted out. I had the wheel speed sensor too. I hear ya on dealer prices, but I have gained a lot of respect for the techs just by doing the tear-down on my racecar. I couldn't have done it w/out the assistance of my MINI tech friend. It all seems simple once you know how. They KNOW these cars. Sometimes the dealer is your friend, even out of warranty.
