Turbo Sound Boost?

I really miss the turbo sound of my old WRX. The whoosh made it sound like I was entering warp speed in star wars or something. Now, I can only hear my turbo unspool as I push in the clutch... Does a CAI improve this sound? I'd rather not spend money to make my MINI noisier but I was kinda curious regardless.

I installed an intake this week and the sound is great. I can hear the turbo and blow off valve with my windows up. I love the sound. An intake makes a huge impact on sound.

If you don't want to spend money on an intake...a $50 K&N filter will allow you to hear the blow off valve...

If you really want to go cheap, just cut the bottom off of your stock intake housing

Thanks all. I've heard bad things on the K&N. At least I'll keep it as an option on my wish list. I like the rumble sounds but I miss the whoosh...

I just installed a CAI this weekend and i LOVE the sound it makes. I installed the Defenders of Speed CAI and it has that perfect WOOSH sound I was looking for!! You can hear the power of the air being sucked in and the woosh when you take your foot off the accelerator makes me want to do it all over again!!! Clint, the guy who runs Defenders of Speed is SUPER helpful and amazing to do business with. They even have a few videos posted on youtube if you search "Defenders of Speed Cold Air Intake" or something to that effect. I am planning on taking a few videos myself this week and can post them too if you are interested in hearing it!

Ugh, I miss the sound of my STi intake also!!! Just bought a K&N and will update tomorrow. I never had a problem with it on my old WRX and my bro is running one on his STi. If you keep the oil to a minimum and don't over oil it, you won't have problems with the MAF like some people have.

STi2Mini did you get the K&N drop in filter or the intake they have? I've been debating whether to try the drop in filter before jumping straight into the DOS CAI even though I really do want it haha.

Just the drop in filter. I really have no need for the CAI yet. I really like the DOS intake but I have other things to save for right now, my wedding!! Haha!! But once the wedding is over and I save a bit I want to start modding the hell out of this thing!

A drop in is hardly going to change the sound...If any change at all.

Get an open element "cai" or a DoS CAI and you'll get all the turbo noise you'd ever want....the "whooosh" of boost building up, the scream of the turbo at full boost, and the "pssssh" of the diverter valve

Just replaced the OEM box with the K&N Intake. I can hear what intake does every time and really enjoy it. I think it may even added some hp or it may just sounds fast.

Well the K&N drop in filter does not add much to the sound of the car or the turbo. The exhaust sounds a bit more deeper, but nothing more. The car feels a bit more responsive though. Definitely not the same sound I got from my STi, but then again the MINI is not anything close to an STi!!

Haha, I often wonder the same thing from time to time. I don't know how I feel about MINIs with BOVs and a lot of the same things I see on Japanese imports. Whatever floats your your boat I guess.

Wow, thats pretty impressive!! I had a COBB Stage II STi so it was pretty fast!! Don't get me wrong, the S is pretty quick!! I actually think the MINI is more fun to drive than my STi. My goal is to make it quicker than a stock STi so I can shut my brother up about how much faster his STi is. Haha!!

From a roll it is easy to make a cooper s or JCW much faster than a stock 2006+ sti ,the pre 2006 sti was a bit more powerful with better gear ratios and would be a better race for a modded Jcw or Cooper s.

from a launch awd will always win.

Glad I'm not the only convert over here from Subaru

I had three Subarus before converting, the last being the 08 STi that had a few goodies on it.

Damn, I would kill for an '08 STi. Ive been in love with the new body style. :tu:

As people have said, if you want an inexpensive way to hear the turbo noises, a cheap universal filter will work. I picked one up for $30 at Autozone. Worked great and made it a bit faster. It never gave me any trouble, or threw any CELs. I didnt start running into trouble until I installed my real air filter, my 1st gen Alta CAI. May just go back to the cheap filter now
