5-speed Sparkle, Grinding type noise

Can anyone help me diagnose this. Usually there is a weird noise when I shift to 2nd and 3rd gear. The noise only happens on those 2 gears regardless it is warm or cold. 2nd gear is usually more noticeable it happens around pass 2k rpms and stops at around 4k or right after I shift into 2nd gear. All I know is that I just bought the car a month ago and it has 103k miles on it. I haven't changed all the fluids yet. Did the engine oil change, spark plugs, air filter, cabin filter and somehow there is green coolant in the cooling system. I plan on changing that once the weather is warm. I'm still trying to find some MTF-94 oil but no luck. Do you guys think that changing the transmission fluid will remedy this problem? I'm pretty sure the trans oil hasn't been changed since the last owner but I just wanted to know if any of you guys have experienced this.

The same thing happened to my 2003 5 speed with 90,000.
3 weeks later, the entire trasnsmission was shot to hell.
That was 4 months ago.
I had just replced the trans fluids and a month before replaced the P/S pump.

Now...It sits in my driveway.
I have no clue what to do with it.
I do not want to replace the trans with the same POS transmission.

If anyone has a suggestion, please email me.

Does anyone want to buy a nice Mini with a shot trans?

Email me, make me an offer.

I'm in Newburgh, NY

Here is your best bet

Somehow they managed to install a 6 speed Getrag in the same engine but
the cost of the Cooper S transmission goes for 3159.00

Your options are few if your trans goes. Switching to the Getrag from the S is one, but it will cost you more than just the trans: you'll need shifter cables, clutch hydraulic line, reverse connector, and probably other stuff that I can't think of at the moment. My advise to you is to bite the bullet and spring for a new 5 speeder. Look at it this way: right now, you have a ton-and-a-half doorstop. With a new trans it's a usable, drivable, sellable (fun) car. Good luck.

Wow! I guess BMW did not do a very good job on these cars after all . I posted a couple of weeks back about the noise in the transmission of a 2002 mini cooper s. and It's inernal damage . unable to source parts for a rebuild and the cost of a new trans is 3500.00 / plus the power steering pump is leaking at the case that's 645.00. I guess it's time to sell it, which stinks cause the car is really fun to drive.
