Interior lights cutting out ramdonly.

So my interior lights (gauge lights, everything on the center-stack, door handles, etc) have been randomly cutting out recently. Curiously however, the buttons on the MFSW stay lit. Cycling the lights on and off does not seem to help, but I have found that tripping the handbrake just enough to light the "BRAKE" light on the tach will reset everything. And in what might be a related issue, I've found that every-so-often when I switch the (exterior) lights off and get out of the car, they are still on.

Any thoughts?

1) Does your car have a dimmer **** for dash lights ? Somtimes they work the dash lights but are not hooked up to the steering wheel controls. My Ford Explorer was like that. Wonder if yours is malfunctioning ?

2) This is the time of the year when little creatures huddle under the bonnet of our warmed up Coopers, then dine on things like the rubber insulation on our wiring....another possibility.
