Colder Weather = Reduced Boost Pressure

So this morning it was 31F degrees outside when going to work. When I got out onto the interstate I was suddenly reminded of how the R56 MINI reduces boost pressure when the ambient tempurature is below 60F degrees.

For those with boost gauges, do you also see this? Has anyone done any research into this?

I've noticed that until full warm-up is achieved I definitely don't see full power. I think the cold makes it worse especially when the engine really cold soaks overnight. You don't see the longer warm-ups in good summer weather so I guess it makes this feel worse than it is?

Yep! The magic number on my Scangauge is when the water temperature hits 175F degrees, then I see full boost. Below 175F degrees boost is < 9PSIg.

If the ambient temperature is below 60F degrees, the boost is still limited (< 13 PSIg).

When ambient temperature is above 60F degrees and water temperature is above 175F degrees the boost goes to 16 PSIg.

I've experienced the same thing with boost pressure and engine coolant temp. I have the new and crappy detuned ECU on my '09 so I can only hit 12psi boost and once in a blue moon 13psi. I can't wait for a friggin tune.

I have a Stage one JCW which I love but I am doing the RMW tune in the spring. It looks to be a solid tune and I have not found any negative feedback about it.

sounds like just the opposite of the supercharged MINIs. With my 05 S the car took on a new personality at temps below 40 degrees-- the engine loved all that cold air being forced in

Once again MINI strikes! They call the car a bull-dog but it seems more like a cat that barks! :-)

Hey how about a canned tune and then a program like Cobbs street tuner and you can do the rest on your own. I did that years ago in a Suby I had and it was fantastic.

It just seems like all we hear is promises and nobody delivers! Make it simple like stated above and sales will increase way beyond these tune parties.

Hey don't dog the R56 now, when Jan gets ahold of mine it's going to be even more vicious!

One my engine is at operating temp, I can get full boost no problem and of course feast on that cold air.

You shouldn't have to wait for Jan to get a hold of yours at all. If a plug in flash was available with limited self tune ability 10 times as many owners would get this upgrade. I mean if this was available and you wanted Jan to tune it because he was in your area I can understand.

I'm just tired of conditions. I've been playing with cars since the late 80's and tuning since the early-90's. With the right software like Cobbs Streettuner anyone with half a brain cell in their head can do this for themselves.
