Metal squeaking in gear box when getting on first gear???

Hey guys

When I'm getting off first gear, I always hear this metal squeaky noise in the gear box area where the shifter is.

Not sure if this is a problem or normal or worse.. a sign of something bad is happening..

btw, I have an O3' MCS.

Any ideas?

I'm guessing you're referring to the "chewbacca" noise. If you run a search you'll find several threads describing something similar. Somewhat a common fault with the manual R53 mcs.

From what I've read, some people had to change out a flywheel and/or clutch. For some that fixed it for good, others only temporarily.

Others just left it as it is and learned to live with the sound. Mine does this from time to time, more frequent when parked in the cold overnight. I would get it once about every other week. It would go away after 1st gear is engaged for the first time. I even got it once when revmatching and letting the clutch slip a bit to long in higher gears.

Seems to be a glazed flywheel issue, from what most people are reporting is the culprit. It doesn't harm the car if left untreated from what I've been hearing. Hope that helps.

man, I can thank you enough for the info. I thought it was something bad to come, (which it maybe) but now at least I can pinpoint the issue.
