Is 220 degree water temp typical for 2007 MCS?
Is 220 degree water temp typical for 2007 MCS?
Hi all--
I've got a 2007 MCS with ~ 9000 miles. I've had no problems with the car until yesterday. The CEL was set yesterday due to P2187 (system too lean @ idle) then the CEL was set today due to P0420 (catalyst efficiency too low).
During a 30 minute highway drive in 100 degree ambient temps today, the P0420 code was set. I got home 6 miles later and scanned the car. I cleared the code, then checked the operating parameters, and the coolant temp was at 220 degrees
.
Is that normal operating temp for these cars? Without a water temp gauge, I'm a little unclear as to what's 'normal'.
Oh, and the car has both a turbo-back exhaust and aftermarket intake. It's possible that one or both of these is responsible for the CEL, but not sure about the coolant temp.
Thanks for any input.

After just finishing my water temp gauge install (stewart warner w/ cravenspeed hotlink), I'm also seeing higher temps... A spirited drive (no A/C) I was running 230-240...

Mine runs around 230 according to my PLX digital gauge. I think I read somewhere that the water thermostat is supposed to open at 230.
That's very hot compared to a lot of older cars. I assume this is new, higher-pressure cooling technology...

Thank you, I asked about this elsewhere in the Rev. discussion.
You all confirmed what I see in Rev. 219-223 with the Plex Wifi sending the data.
So, 220 would be ok and it appears others are seeing 230. I suspect the spirited drivers.

if the exhaust has removed the oem cats and is catless.. or the current cat on it is not effecient enough
it can deffinately throw a code
After several weeks of having the gauge on .. 220-225 (never above 230) is my standard. I must have misread the gauge initially.
Ottoman_FD3S is quite right about the source of your CEL code. The CEL code may hve nothing to do with the running temperature.
Some aftermarket vendors have had trouble with their turboback throwing CEL codes, catless or with aftermarket cat. I think you may have installed one of those down pipes. There has been some fixes tried but the code seems to comes back eventually. Another vendor, Riss, seems to be working on an o2 sim that seem to correct the code. However, only time will tell.
Did you lose power when the CEL code comes on?
I think it is quite unlikely that the CAI is the problem.
I saw 220 on the '08 MCS and currently see 220 on the '09 JCW. -Scangauge
I wonder if it is because cooler EGTs from direct injection require the engine to operate hotter than the average car?
One thing and as just a precaution; make sure your fan fuses arent popped.

I have the same concerns about an engine running at 220 with no coolant temperature gauge. I found a device that connects to the OBD connector under the instrument panel that reads the serial data stream from the PCM. It is user configureable and shows 4 different sensor readings at the same time. It even shows the boost from the turbocharger. You can see it on sale at Autoanything.com right now for 239.99. It's very simple to install and configure.

220 F is a normal operating temp for the MINI.
I'm running from 222 to 227, never seen it higher but then summer has not set in and I'm not running my AC.
yet. I'm using the Insight CTS from Edge
