Mysterious oil leak?!...

I have an '05 MCS with roughly 75K on it. I kept the engine stock for a while, but finally decided to get under the hood and start doing some engine mods. This past Saturday I installed an Alta 15% reduction supercharger pulley, new spark plugs, spark plug wires and a coilover pack. Before these mods I had absolutely no issues whatsoever. I am not correlating these installs to the problems now, but perhaps something that went array during install that I overlooked or missed.

The past several nights, some sort of oil has been leaking, a modest amount, near the power steering fan and the surrounding undercarriage of the car. When I got home from work tonight I decided to pop the hood and try and see what is going on. Upon my opening, a vail of white smoke rushed out at me. I also detected a distinct burning odor. I am assuming this came from engine oil being burned up? I inspected the oil filter and didn't see any leaks, checked the oil pan, didn't see or feel any leaks. However, on the heat shield right behind the valve cover, there was trace oil residue! Also, the coilover pack connector had trace oil residue as well as two of the right screws securing the valve cover (looking down on it with the hood open).

During my install I had to jack up the engine. Do you think something may have come loose?

Do I have a valve gasket leak? Is that what is causing oil to get on the heat shield and perhaps drip down to an area near the power steering fan? Or is it something much more serious?

I don't think it could be power steering fluid as gravity dictates movement downwards...

I am basically a noobie when it comes to this sort of matter. I can take things apart, follow directions, and reinstall, but I am not good at diagnosing problems.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Jake

Difficult to near impossible to diagnose with the information you have given. Everyone could guess for awhile and someone might be right or not. You can always wipe down the engine real well to get rid of any existing oil, go for a short drive and recheck to see where any new oil might be. I would make sure that ALL of my fluid levels were where they should be first. You could also pick up some fluorescent dye at your FLAPS (Favorite Local Auto Parts Store), add it to the oil and use a black light to track where the source of the oil leak is. Or you can just take it to a mechanic that you trust and ask them to source the leak for you. It really shouldnt take very long for a mechanic to determine where the leak is.

Found the culprit! I have a cracked valve cover! How that happened I do not know... going to my dealer to get a new valve cover. At least it isn't more serious.

You could have overtightened the coil pack.
