Well, start off easy and see if you can still turn the fan by hand. Then, check the fuses. The relay should be pretty easy to check as well, although you might have to temporarily scavenge one of your other relays to test with.

Does the fan still come on when you turn on the air conditioning? If it does, your problem might be with the coolant temperature sensor rather than the fan itself.

Give the air conditioner test a shot anyway. There are often multiple coolant temperature sensors in the car - the fan circuit might have its own. I know that the coolant temp sensor that drives the temperature gauge in my car's Chrono Pack is different from the one that the Scangauge reads.

Scott is right, there is usually a coolant temp switch and a coolant temp sensor. The switch controls the fan and the sensor gives the computer a gauge reading.

Ouch, the OEM unit is $278 @ ECSTuning. It looks like it might only come paired with the housing. It's a little more at PelicanParts.

You can find the fan unit at www.rockauto.com for $110. I'm not sure of the quality though but the OEM quality level isn't all that great anyway. Not only that, I don't think the geniuses at MINI/BMW designed a check loop to warn the operator that the fan is faulty... same with the P/S pump fan.

Actually the ECU is the only thing that controls the fan; it does so with a input from the ECT sensor or input from the freon pressure sensor. Data from the ECT sensor is used for the gauge as well.

Does anybody know of someone who has successfully installed the RockAuto fan on a 2005 or later MCS?

I saw a thread yesterday where a 2003 owner said it wasn't a direct install because it was missing something but someone mentioned those parts weren't needed in 2004+ cars so it "should" be a direct fit...

I've read that the Low speed is activated by a relay in the fuse box inside the engine bay. Have you checked that yet?

all the relays check out...in fact there are 2 relays that control stage 1 and 2...the relays were swapped around and the same effect happened so i know its the fan...plus the sound its making isnt good either

Might as well be "made in China"

I cannot believe the short life span of some components on the Mini. The fan motors on my 1987 Porsche 944S (126k) and 2001 VW New Beetle (154k) run smooth.

well i went ahead and ordered the Rock auto fan...i talked to the sales lady to figure out the difference between the two versions(standard and econ)...the standard is built to OEM specs while the econ is the cheaper version...the reason for the price diff is because of the various companies and warehouses they deal with...one price could be lower but if they run out and go to the next company it could be higher

Well i just got off the phone with Classic MINI Auto Campus which is a NAM Vendor. They sell the MINI fan for $291 - 20% NAM member discount which comes out to $232 which is a hell if a discount.

Even with the discount though i think im also going to try the RockAuto part and hope its a direct fit. At worse i hope they are good at taking returns. Right now the $100 savings is pretty decent.

well the fan from rock auto came in today...and was suprised...i know some people were worried about the quality...

the fan isnt made by rock auto...its made by TYC! for those who dont know the name TYC is a big company in the import world...so the quality is very nice...it feels very sturdy and not flimsy at all
