Cold Engine Start
Cold Engine Start
Not sure if this is related to the Cold Start Issue. You'll have to excuse me since I am a new owner and am unfamiliar with the Cold Start Issue problem.
I have a new 2009 MC w/keyless ignition (convenience pkg) - right now it has about 1600 miles on it. This ONLY happens when the engine has not been started for a while - not necessarily in cold weather since the car is garaged - but definitely when the engine is cold. Since I am unfamiliar with the MC engines, I'm not even sure this is a problem.
When the engine is cold and I first start it, I get what sounds like a loud whining on startup - almost as though the starter is being wound out. It does not seem to affect the engine or the performance (I don't think it does anyway) and it only will do it the one time while the eingine is cold. Has anyone else experienced this or know what this might be before I bring it to the dealer to look at?

Motoringfile.com has an extensive amount of information concerning this subject. Their latest is this: http://www.motoringfile.com/2008/12/...ther-starting/
Mine has the same sound you describe on startup, and I daily mine. It just sounds like the motor starting up and the turbo taking in air on mine.
It seems to ago away after about 3-4 seconds from startup on mine

To me it does not sound like a grinding noise - it's more like the starter is winding out or something. Like I said before - it only happens when the engine is cold. It's almost like it's trying too hard to start. Once the engine warms up (even a little bit), the noise will not happen when you try and start it. And, like Gilboyto said also, it only lasts for a few seconds. I did ask the dealer about it and he said it's normal but he has not heard the sound himself. I have a new owner's dinner next Tuesday so I'll ask them about it then. Hopefully, the engine will have cooled down enough by the end of the dinner that the noise will reappear.
I'll post what I find out.
