I would imagine that you would have to see your local dealer to have it reset.

I would suggest you don’t reset it. If you have warranty issues MINIUSA might give you a hard time. You will know when it was changed and your MINI will have the expected mileage when it needs the free oil change from the dealer. Let the dealer reset it, you can always change the oil any time you want.

Agreed, I wouldn't re-set the counter, just keep a personal record of 'in house' oil changes.

That's what I'll be doing.

Keep in mind that they do "other stuff" (check brakes and fluids, etc.) at the free scheduled service. It's not just an oil change reminder, it's a countdown to your free dealer service. I wouldn't try to reset it.

Just had my 10K service. The dealer will reset it when the oil is changed. If you change your oil between services leave the counter alone. It indicates the next service interval at the dealer.

Just wondering:

When all of your "free" services are up (3 or 36K whichever comes 1st), would you not reset the reminder to keep an eye on other types of service intervals? I think that's what you are getting at, but I wanted to clarify.

fyi.

02 mini w/48K miles. Just did the oil change today. The other 2 times I had the dealer do it. It is a travesty that they charge $195.00 for 30 minutes of work.

here's a shameless cut & paste that i downloaded somewhere last year:

"You may find this useful if you do your own oil changes. Keep in mind you should wait until your factory service expires, since resetting the indicator may lead the dealer to deny oil changes since the indicator does not indicate an oil change is due.
Press and hold the trip odometer button.
Insert car key and turn it to the first position.
Watch for the word "RESET" to appear on the Odometer indicator.
Release the trip odometer button, then press & hold it again.
Wait for the "RESET" message to flash.
Release the button, and then press & release (once only)
The Service interval is now reset to 10,000 miles "
