Heater not blowing heat

hello its been a problem for a while now but now its getting agravating since its starting to get cold, my heater will not blow hot air its just like getting in and starting the car up and having it blow whatever the ambient air is around you, the AC doesnt work anymore but thats another story.

now i know to check the coolant level and all is fine their, sometimes it blows hot then most of the time nothing, it also has a luke warm heat coming out of the driver side from time to time then cold air coming from the passinger side at the same time could the door inside the hvac be stuck preventing the heat from coming throu or could the automatic air modual on my center stack be fouling up? any ideas would be soooooo apreciated so i can look into this and hopefully figure it out, maybe theirs something i missed!!!!

thanks guys
christian

There are one or two servos in the dash that control the flow of air through the AC vs. the heat exchanger. There have been reports here of the sticking sometimes, and failing sometimes.

anyone else having this issue? Similar issue started with my 2 nights ago. I have an '07 MCSa. I am driving along the other night and go to put my heater on and its working fine then I gradually begin to feel the temperature cooling....eventually to almost feeling like the a/c is on...then it began to get hot again. This hot/cold temperature flux happened for my entire 20 minute drive....and again all day yesterday. Any suggestions anyone? I have the manual temperature control, not the automatic.

I'm having the same issue with my '05 MCS with auto air. Regardless of temp or distrib. it blows only cool or air-temp. air.
UPDATE Just spoke with dealer (MINI of Annapolis) and the first opening for them to simply look at the problem is 10 DAYS OFF! Guess I'd better start dressing for the cold - or hope the weather warms up !

Do a search for the A/C heater diagnostics and report the results.

Cool. I'll have to do that. Any way to check it without pulling it out? I mean my car is getting up to operating temperatures and staying there in the sub zero weather...Thanks Kelly

I don't know how to check it, i'm not that mechanically inclined.
But it's worth haveing the dealer or another gear head to take a gander at it

Kelly, thanks for the heads up. I do believe you're right. Although my aftermarket temp guage has told me on the track I'm hitting 300-310*, my stock temp guage has always been dead in the middle. Well, yesterday, it hit 3/4 of the way up, and then slowly dropped back down to the middle... So I'm assuming my thermostat is sticking at some point, then opening? Egh, I'll just replace it anyways. Car has 115K on it

may i offer one caveat?

if you're driving and the temp gauge shoots to "H" you could potentially overheat.
this happened to me during my morning commute.

if you can't be towed, and need to get somewhere quickly

turn ON your heater
turn OFF your "AC" snowflake button
turn OFF the 'recycle air' on your settings
turn the fan selection to "HI"
open all vents
select all vents on your settings

this will draw the heat off your engine, and thus buy you some time to 'limp' to a safe place to be towed, or your dealer/mechanic

watch the needle tho, if it creeps to H, pull over and let it cool down for a couple minutes.. start again, watch that needle tho... you don't want to deal with more than just your faulty thermostat

good luck

It can be checked without removing; use a non contact laser pyrometer, point the beam at the thermostat housing, the temperature will jump when the thermostat opens. Note the temperature where the jump occurs and you will have your answer.

Ok, I'm not familiar with where the thermostat housing is? I've done a quick searched on here, but haven't found anything yet. Are there any pictures or a link that would help me out? I don't have a laser pyrometer, but should be able to get one fairly easy. As for the needle hitting 3/4 - H, it briefly hit that mark and then came down...It was all of a sudden though. It didn't slowly kreep up to the "H"...just an instant spike and then came back down

Same issue, getting checked tomorrow

My 06 Cooper is having the exact same problem. I'm hoping it's simply a faulty thermostat although I'm still not sure why a faulty thermostat would change the temperature of the air blowing out. That is, if it's hot and I want hot, hot air sould come out . Maybe I'm over thinking the issue but I'll let you all know what I hear tomorrow after a trip to the dealer.

Also got the quick spike to "H" during normal, city driving and an instant drop back down to to mid level. I've also noticed the fan is EXTREMELY loud and active for about 45 seconds after I park the car, a loud whine and then is subsides...

Yep, same symptoms as me. On a good note, I'll be scheduling an appt. with my uncle who works at a BMW dealership to get it replaced. I do plan on purchasing that other thermostat that has been mentioned. Not the stock one. It looks as if this alternative opens a bit more than the stock one. Let us know what you find out at the dealership!

I just had this same issue on my '06 MCS (no hot air / single temporary spike of the temp gauge) - dealer replaced my thermostat & 1st stage fan.

No more problems.
