Sunroof issues

I'm not sure if anyone has had this problem but for the entire day, my sunroof and windows have been opening at the absolute WORST time, when it has been raining.

The interior has been soaked and I am wondering what could be going on. So far this is 3 times during the day they have opened.

Anyone help me out?

Ive started to realize that I cannot lock my car anymore without this occurring. About 6 months ago my key fob stopped locking and unlocking my driver side door, now whenever I lock my car (Passenger and trunk) it immediately unlocks and opens my windows and sunroof.

Is this an electrical problem? Can anyone help me out here?

After examining it again I sat in the car, unlocked, and waited for it to open everything. It makes the unlocking sound and then opens everything. I read that this is something that the dealership can program into the car (Hold the unlock button and it rolls down windows and opens sunroof). If this is true maybe there is an issue with either the battery or the unlocking mechanism causing it to fire without being pressed?

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just saw your post. Check your batter it could be failing. Also check all the connection wires going to the batter, i know when you disconnect them from the batter that resets the ecu and if no connection then the windows and sunroof will open incase so you dont get locked out and have no power to the vehicle. Also if everything looks ok disconect everything and reset the ecu should be good to go.

Thanks for the response Jungle. So you're saying it may be an issue with the battery? If so I should disconnect it and then reconnect? The car drives well, in fact I just drove 20 miles last night with no problems.

You say that disconnecting the battery will reset the ECU and then I should be okay?

Hi roguemini - It sounds like the (unfortunately) common failure on both 1st gen and 2nd gen MINis: the door lock actuator (either driver or passenger side) gets wet and shorts out, then will trigger "convenience opening" mode all by itself, opening the windows down partway or all the way and opening the sunroof as well. The door insert containing the door lock actuator module is not sealed very well against water with the MINI and this is what causes the failure of the module in the first place.

Fortunately, it is a fairly easy fix for the dealer if they know what to look for. Run a search on this issue here on NAM or on mini2.com (there are several threads discussing this failure... try "windows opening by themselves" or similar) and print out a few instances where this happened to take with you to your dealer in case the tech has not dealt with it before or cannot otherwise find a PUMA case.

Good luck!

Yes after I had some an electrical mod on my car and had disconnected the battery, the connections on one of the cabels was not good so the windows would automatically roll down by themselves just in case power was lost to lock and unlock the doors. But try taking the battery connections off for a while and letting the ecu reset itself and see if that does the trick. If not then maybe you have the issue with the door lock actuator getting wet, not sure havent ever heard of that one. Hope everything works out!

For the time being I have removed the fuses that operate windows and sunroof. It's a lame solution at best but me being a college student, I'm going to have to save some money to cover the installation and parts costs. I'll definitely test the battery trick too!

Thanks so much guys
