Another Oil Change Question
Another Oil Change Question
Since I bought my MINI, "Nigel", new in 05/06, I have followed the owner's manual/engine computer for oil change intervals at approx. 15,000 and have had the work done at the dealer. Since joining this site, I have noticed others stating that this interval is too long, and 7500 to 10,000 is the max. interval. My question is this: have I done any engine damage by going that far between oil changes?
I am now at 36,000 and Nigel does not use any oil (dipstick reading remains constant) and have had no drivability problems or odd noises. For my next oil change, I'm not going over 10,000. Getting a little paranoid!
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The dealer and BMW suggest the interval changes. I have seen lots here that only do the dealer changes, with no problems. I change mine at 1/3 intervals, every 5K because I participate in PDX/Time Trials, Solo and RoadRally with the SCCA. Since I do my own servicing since new ( dealer changed 1st at 10K and never been back) I do not have to drive to dealer and wait or leave car. I also do my safety checks during these intervals and look the whole car over at this time. Will it last any longer than yours, will never know. I have always had my cars for 140K-160Kmiles before I sold and bought something else. My 03 has 54K and runs great with no real problems, even has the transmission fluid changed twice now along with plugs and brake fluid.
I'm way old school so I follow the 3k rule. Yeah, it's hardcore overkill and expensive but my car is my sole transportation so I'm gonna take care of it. Redline fluids, NGK plugs, top tier gas. No convience store pee water for me.
A little paranoia when it comes to oil changes is a good thing. Changing oil too often is waaay better than not changing it often enough. 5-7K is good for average driving (i.e. no hardcore racing or constant stop-and-go traffic driving).
