Had mine looked at Fri., they said the shifter needs replaced because of a bad sensor. Said the part will be in "3-5 days" but we'll see. Picked it up Fri. night, still driving it until it's time to get fixed, as my dealer hardly ever has loaners available.

RJKimbell -- since we were shipmates, maybe there was a "virus" going around. I'm sorry to hear Molly is having the same problem [and especially the walking in 101 degree weather!], hope you get it worked out soon.
Thanks Ivygirl!! Yeah, the 101 3+mi. walk was no picnic. But we've recovered. Molly will be visiting the dealer on Wednesday to have this and a few other things looked at, I will report back once she is back home.

I know most people are bummed about things going wrong with their MINI's...I'm just not that worried. If it were truly mechanically then I'd be worried and Molly would be immediately Flatbedded to the Delear, but since it just a minor annoyance I'll wait for her to get fixed and be very happy when she comes back home. Hopefully by Thursday as my Mom is coming for a visit on Friday and I want to surprise her and pick her up in Molly (Her 4-wheel MINI Grand Daughter!!)

Update on Lucy:

The dealer called me yesterday and said they had the part. The first available appointment was next Monday. The first available with a loaner? 8/15. Needless to say, I'm dropping her off Monday morning.

RJK -- I feel the same way. Sure it sucks that my car is only 3 months old, but it's all under warranty. A minor inconvenience, but it could happen with any car.

Add me to the list. Got home about 20 minutes ago and the yellow gear warning light came on with an exclamation mark inside.

Will bring the car in 7:30am on Friday - they say it should be an easily reprogrammable issue and that I should be out w/n an hour. Here's hoping. If it's something more involved...well, they'll give me a rental if it's going to be a longer than 3 hours.

Took delivery on 4/28 of an MCCa.

Just an aside to those who might be interested there's a twin thread but solely devoted to the Clubman https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=146433 I responded to you over there Harold...but will keep reading this one, as well.

This stinks Harold. Copy this thread and send it to your SA, maybe?

LOL - hope it's not an omen! Hang in there, Harold.

I am planning on driving mine tomorrow...and my try my other key just for the heck of it to see if it matters. If I get stuck in Nowheresville, I'll have to call MINI's Roadside Assistance. I surely don't want to.

No, don't think about that.. If others have had theirs fixed, we will too. Hang in there and see what the rest of the week brings.

Well I got mine back yesterday. They replaced the entire gearshift mechanism. From what I was told, there is a plastic housing in the shift mechanism that expands when it gets hot outside and won't let the shifter return to park. I let the dealership keep it for an extra day to make sure the problem hadn't come back. It works perfectly for now.

Also initially the dealership tried to tighten up the shift cables to fix the problem. I took it in the next day for the same problem. I was lucky that it has been in the 90s(close to 100) here, so the dealer was able to duplicate the problem.

I'm just wondering idf this will cause an issue in the future if the new piece warps over time and the same thing happens??

Glad it's fixed. As for it being a long term issue...I'd never ever heard of this before...but who knows. Let's hope it's not and that all will be AOK!

Mine was "healed" this morning for the first start...fine through the second...but when I turned the car off for the second time - the Gear Warning Light was on again.

As for heat being an issue...I guess it depends upon what exactly the problem is - thankfully, I have had no problem shifting in or out of Park, etc. We'll see what happens next.

To explain this a bit further, shifting in/out of 'park' never was a problem. The car alerted with this icon because it wasn't able to pick up the shifter placement correctly. There is a sensor that tells the car that it is in 'park'. The piece of plastic I was refering to (that was replaced) expands just enough to not let the sensor read that the car is in 'park' even when it is. Also, if the icon comes up it may or may not let you take the key out of the ignition slot (this happened to me so I was eager to get it repaired), since the car thinks that it is not in 'park'.

My guess if you have this problem, it won't go away until the part is replaced or it gets cooler outside. Maybe the problems are caused by different issues or maybe they might be diagnosed differently. It will be interesting to find out what is fixed/replaced (if anything?) on everybody else's MINI.

Thanks for the more detailed explanation. It certainly sounds like what's happening to mine. It was only in the 80s here yesterday...I don't consider that too hot...today it's warmer - but a few weeks ago on a long haul of a MINI run it was in the mid to upper 90s and all was fine... She shall see ...but you're right if it's a real problem it won't just go away.

I shall report back!

well, they were able to duplicate the problem, was driving when he called me and wasn't really paying much attention to him after he said he found it, but I think he said its a sensor or something like that. He special ordered the part(s) should be in Monday or Tuesday.
Yippee!!
Hope it'll be a permanent fix?

Yay for you Harold!!!!! That's a relief, for sure.

I can't keep up with both of these threads...I posted just now on the Clubman forum thread: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...1&postcount=45 about how I found the code that was stored on my own...

UPDATE:
Had Molly in the dealership on Wednesday to have the Amber Cog/Exclamation Mark issue fixed. She was completed that day...PROBLEM she didn't get fixed!! She had the same icon when I turned her off after we got home. Have been playing phone tag with the dealer I will try again tomorrow, but I'm leaving town on Monday and will not be back 'til next weekend. I've given Hubby the option of taking Molly back in or waiting until I get back.

That sucks. Looks like this is an issue far spread and not so uncommon that they should all have a proper fix somehow?

I am taking pics evertime the icon came on, hopefully when they change the sensor it won't again, but if it does- I will yake her back in, and if it doesn't fix, eventually lemon law her.

Could be a problem at the source- the company that makes the sensors, maybe they have screwed up, big time?

Just came back from having mine fixed - they adjusted the shifter cable per SI 24-01-08 and recheck OK.

Nevertheless, I drove home...stopped car and voila: the Gear Warning Light with ! was back and is back. Phone call made and am awaiting call back.

One good thing is that we now know that a weird wind whistling noise is caused by the right hand driver's side mirror cap. It's taped now...and hopefully will be refitted or replaced.

As sands through the hour glasssssss.......

The shifter cable adjustment doesn't work. Mine tried it too and was unsuccessful. They ended up replacing the entire shifter mechanism. SA e-mailed me last night and said all is good. Hopefully all of the dealers that have been getting cars with this issue relay this info to Mini so that they will improve the shifter mechanism so that future owners don't have this problem. So far I've only seen this on MCa cars. It seems like the MCSa owners would be having this problem as well but maybe the MCS automatic shifters are a different unit than the Justacooper automatics. Hopefully I will have my car back this weekend (they are fixing a few cosmoline related issues as well.).

Don't you just wish they could all read this thread? I do.

I've had cosmoline leaking too on this MINI...much more so than ever before. I think I've seen the last of it, but one never knows when it's so hot out.

Thanks for your post RussKeys. I may print out your post and bring it with me on 7/30.
