Expansion tank empties very quickly

Hi I seem to have a problem with the expansion tank. I top it up with coolant but about 2 weeks later its bone dry... It is very strange, where does it all go??

I asked my local mechanic and he said he had seen this before and its not really to worry too much about because its only the expansion tank..

Anybody else had this issue?

You most likely have a leak, just where is the 64,000 dollar question. You can have a local shop do a pressure test and that may find the leak but reading other posts I think yours is at the thermostat housing. Other posters have said the level goes down with no visible signs of leakage such as puddles on the ground.

to clarify a popular misconception, your mechanics, about the expansion tank on the Mini.
It's not a recovery tank, it's part of the cooling system and should not be dry.

Hope this helps...

Hi it turns out that the problem wasnt a leak, it was to do with trapped air in the pipes (Sorry Im not a mechanic)

The mechanic just undid some screws and let some air out, and now the tank doesn't seem to empty itself anymore... quite a mystery to me, but its fixed!!

If you are having the same issue this might be of some use.

Thanks

Well that was a relief. Cheap fix. Just pay for labor.
