Clunk

2008 MC with 1,000 miles where I get an almost routine "ka clunk" just about every time I let out the clutch when changing gears up or down - feels and sounds like something is loose or weak return springs. The car seems to otherwise drive fine, but I'm wondering if this is relatively "normal" for 2nd gen minis. I can usually avoid this sound only if the clutch is let out very smoothly, but it doesn't seem "normal" - our 2006 MCS does not feel this sloppy. Thanks. Greg

I've noticed this only really becomes obvious after the car is well warmed up - before then, any related clutch "linkage" noises are nonexistent. Any ideas?

I don't have that particular clunk, not when releasing the clutch and changing gears...

Have someone check out the motor mounts to make sure they are not loose or broken. It's probably nothing, but I had a similar experience in a Volvo with a clutch and when shifting it would do something similar with the noise. Turned out it was a broken motor mount.

I hear linkage noise shifting when the window's down and the radio's off in a parking deck (i.e. in quiet situations), I've been told that it's normal.

noises

Good old "normal" explanations from dealers. On mine, this noise is almost nonexistent until the car is completely warmed up, at which point things begin sounding "sloppy" whether shifting up or down or coasting. If that and my new "normal" mini clutch squeal get progressively worse, I'll have it checked. Thus far, I'm unimpressed...greg

It seems like a fair number of people here would want the dealer to do a bunch of work to cure something that may just really be normal. I'd prefer to not have the dealer touch anything, even an oil change, unless absolutely necessary. I imagine there'd be any number of ways to screw up, say, a clutch change.
