Replacing 'C' Column Covers

I have some not so pretty scratches on the 'C' column covers of my '07 MINI. Can someone please tell me how to replace those?

They look like they just slide out of the tracks, back towards the hatch. However another problem is unhooking the hatch strut (which is in the way) in order to allow the column covers to come out. I'd prefer to do this myself if at all possible...instead of taking it to the shop. Mainly because it looks easy enough (hopefully!).

Have you tried polishing out the scratches first?

No I have not because it seems to me that something like Scratch X will just ruin the finish even more. These things are of course hard plastic as opposed to the actual painted finish of the rest of the car. Plastic never seems to like polishing in my experience.
