May need a new transmission

My 2002 MINI started making a clattering sound when accelerating last week. It only happens when in gear and above 3000 RPM. It is constant unless I decelerate or go into neutral. The shop I took it to said that my Transmission needed to be replaced due to an input shaft bearing being damaged. They also said that this is a common issue in MINIS that have 60,000 to 80,000 miles. Has anyone else had this problem? Does this sound right?

Neither of my 02's have had this problem, but they haven't reached 60 k yet. Sounds like your problem is definately in the tranny. Do you have an automatic or manual transmission?

Ugh... Just bought the car in December so this is a pretty harsh blow. It's a manual.

I have the 03 CVT needed new trans at 50K.
Now at 99,000. Uh, oh.

Husband has 06 manual now at 22K.
It is at the dealer for the third time due to the trans.
Stuck going up the on ramp. Had to have it towed.
Dealer said clutch you may have to pay. However the
MINI is stuck and does not move. Towed to John's
European they disagree.
It never was smooth shifting. The funny part is after
being towed the second time it moves. They got in to test
and it drove. Of course they said "Whats the problem"?
After test driving they think it is something with 2nd gear.
This should be covered so back to the dealer he drives.

Check out a thread in the forum for Modifications-Cooper (non S). The thread is titled "Who here has blown their Midlands". Towards the end there is a description of a "noise" like yours. Also, is it mainly second gear?

It's anything above 2nd but 2nd is by far the worst. I bought it private seller so I'm pretty much stuck with the bill. Luckily it is still running so I'm going to cross my fingers I can trade it in to a non-mini dealer. You would think they'd fix this problem after 8 years.

They did for the 2005 and 2006 Gen 1 MINIs. They replaced the Midland 5 speed with a Getrag 5 speed.

Yeah, I pretty much don't know what to do. I was going to try to sell it to carmax but I don't know if they'll find out about the transmission. Should I just try to sell it for 4 grand less than what it's worth and state it has a problem? This is really really bad!

I think I am experiencing the same thing right now. I have about 66,000 and it just started yesterday. How long can I drive on it, I have a field meeting tomorrow morning and plan to get it fixed this weekend?

So do I need a new tranny or what is the fix?

If it's in the tranny, you have to either rebuild it or buy a new one.

Internal Midland parts are all 'special order' items. We can usually ship about 1 week after we receive your order.

Some of the parts are listed here. If you don't see the part you need, let me know.
