Remove and replace PS Pump

Has anyone had the opportunity to remove and replace the PS pump on an 03 Mini Cooper. I have performed oil changes and replaced the brakes - is it a job for the average do it yourselfer or am I asking for trouble. I have access to ramps and tools. Any details would be helpful

I too am awaiting a thorough write-up on this DIY. I looked at mine (which needs replaced) and it seems like its not an overly difficult chore. I think the most difficult problem will be removing the rear bolts that hold the PS pump in place. There isn't much leverage/space.

The front subframe has to be lowered from the car. There are some threads on changing a clutch that detail the process.

Actually, you can remove the P/S pump without dropping the subframe, but it requires the removal of the lower engine mount so you can use a pry bar as leverage to push the engine block towards the front of the car. Only requirement would be the use of a lift, as there would be no way in hell I'd attempt that on jackstands. And just as an FYI, I've seen this done, as my P/S pump needed to be removed recently to replace my leaking P/S hoses and this is the method my mechanic used.

Boy, I'm glad I didn't read this before I replaced mine. I replaced it in place w/o dropping the subframe and w/o a lift. The biggest PITA were the OEM hose clamps that BMW uses. You have to be somewhat of a contortionist and a second set of hands comes in handy but it is manageable. My brother and I did mine in about 3 hours. Sorry, no details or pictures (can't get a camera in there). I just dropped my skid plate and went at it.

I suppose the official procedure involves lowering the subframe.

dropping subframe

The Bentley manual mentions nothing about dropping the subframe. Appears to be a fairly straight forward project - some have mentioned that it helps to be a contortionist because of space issues.

Its been two years since this post started and no pictures or How-to's?!

I will remove mine and clean it out and maybe install a small radiator to help disburse some heat (I live in AZ...there is a lot of heat in the engine bay). If anyone has a "how-to" on this or know of some tricks to make it simpler, it would be greatly appreciated

Replaced my PS pump a few months ago. Used a tip from a DIY i read (I think in this forum). Without dropping the subframe the pump cannot be lifted up enough to allow it's front bolt to clear it's bracket. To remedy this I used a dremmel tool to cut a 1/4 in slot in the bracket allowing the pump to slide straight out. Adding this bracket slot does not put the replacement pump in jeopardy of moving because the rear bolts are unaffected.
