Power Steering Pump/Fan Issues

I'm having issues with my power steering on 2003 MCS 46,000 miles

The problem first started with intermittent loss of power steering (very interesting when going around corners!). Loss would just be for a few seconds and then would return. Did a bit of research which pointed me in direction of the PS cooling fan - which I checked and found to be completely jammed with road salt and crud - could barely rotate it with my fingers.

Removed fan, cleaned it up and managed to get it rotating again on the bench by hooking up 12V power. However, it didn't seem to be running as freely as it should.

Replaced fan and got MINI up to operating temp - no fan activation - checked 5A fuse F39 in passenger compartment - fuse blown - replaced 5A fuse & restarted car - no fan and fuse blown again.

Checked other fuses associated with PS (F41 5A in passenger fuse box; and FL4 100A and F8 30A in engine compartment fuse box) and all seem OK.

I have ordered a replacement fan which I plan to try to see if that is solution (or if F39 5A fuse continues to blow).

If it does continue to blow, am I looking at an issue with the controller in the power steering pump or possibly an issue with the relay (K69923)??

Also, regardless of the fan issue, is the power steering pump on its way out (due to overheating when fan not working) based on these intermittent losses of power steering?

Any input and guidance would be appreciated.

I have the same problem... but my F39 fuse is blowing every day!!!! I to am looking at the controller unit or the relay. as far as the pump is concerned I don't think that is your problem... if you look at a wiring diagram you would see that the 100amp fuse would/should blow first if it is your pump. if I am not mistaken the 5 amp fuse is on another part of the circuit and should not be blowing solely because your pump is going bad... when my stuff gets fixed I'll let you know what the remedy was. please please tell me what yours was when you find out.

Have either of you had the warranty recall for the PS/coolant fan?

If not get it into a dealer and have them change out the common fuse wiring.

Replace Power Steering Fan

I replaced my power steering fan at a local auto shop for about $220 and now I have no issues with my 2003 MCS. Good luck!
