brake dust dirtying rims

My rims are constantly getting covered in brake dust grime and need to be cleaned often -- Has anyone gotten brake pads that don't shed so much dust?

Get ceramic pads!!! They cost almost the same, live 2 times longer and have better bite.

BMW pads are notorious for putting out LBS of dust. Ceramic pads FTW!

What they said.

Go to the 'tires and wheels' forum and do a search on 'Hawk' and you'll see many recommendations.

If you don't race, don't want your rotors chewed up, don't want any dust, no squeal, etc, and feel just like the OEMs, try PBR/Axxis Deluxe Plus. They have the OEM sensor slots, and the rear pads have the spring clips. Just great commuter pads that will last a long time and have good feel and NO DUST.

I know they are not the beloved EBCs, Hawks, or Mintexs that everyone on the forum recommends. Just a suggestion for a pad that will end your dusting problems... affordable also.

Forget pads. Get new rims.

Actually, a search on the subject should be productive.

I put Carbotech pads on my 2004. I have the street compound on mine and almost no dust . My husband has the auto X compound on his 2007 and he it has reduced the dust a great deal.

http://www.ctbrakes.com/ talk to Mike or Danny and they can help you determine what is best for your driving style

Are you saying there's dust proof rims?
Or are you suggesting that the rims be replaced when dirty?...

adding a coat of wax will help some and make them much EASIER to clean until you go to a less "dusty" pad when the time comes.

Black or Anthracite colored rims will also take care of this issue. You'll never see any brake dust again.

my $.02:
a second for Mintex Red Box Pads ~ recently replaced my OEM pads with the "Reds" at 60K (still plenty of life left in my OEMs BTW).

Significantly less dust (I've got white rims) - same stopping performance (street use only) ... and they were reasonably priced. I'll have to get back with you on the wear life.
Note the Mintex's do not have the slot for the brake wear sensor in the right rear (just have to tie it off) - they do have the left front slot for the sensor.

I would recommend Carbo Tech. You can PM me for details as I've been in the market for long long time and got quite knowledge.

excellent choice. i've used them for years on other cars. i need to go ahead and put a set on the mini so i can stop washing the wheels twice a week.

wheel wax makes them easier to clean, but they get just as dirty.

PBR's not dust free

I have an 03' S model, original rims(White enamel). Installed PBR ceramics. It did REDUCE dust and definitely gave better pedal feel. It DID NOT do away with dust. Next time around I'll try the Hawk's. With my combination-original wheels, I doubt that I'll find a dust free pad. I just like the looks of the original wheel and after a day on the road, I don't mind a little clean up. As to clean up, a quick spray of water, almost any cleaner, and another spray, you're done. The change from original pads to ceramic was worth the increase in pedal response and performance.

1stmini,

just to set the record straight, I did not recommend PBR ceramics, I recommended the PBR Deluxe Plus which are organic. I still stand by my practically no dust statement.

I think i'll be going with the PBR's as well. Whats the difference between the ceramic and organic?

So far, only a week of use, my white wheels are staying white , thanks to your suggestion on these pads. The bed in took a day longer than I expected but no big deal at all and they seem to work well. Thanks!

Everytime I wash my S-lites, I use a mist of instant detailer (whatever brand is laying around) as I'm drying them. It seems to help. Also try waxing the wheels once in a while.

I know for some cars they have covers that go behind the rims to stop the dust. They're great- if you want to heat up your brakes quickly and possibly destroy your rotors. So before anyone suggests it, don't buy those.
