Tapping/clatter noise (sounds like pinging)

First of all, sorry about it if this already covered. I did a search, but I could find only 1st generation MINI.

My 2008 MCS is one month old and now I have 1650 mls. It's 6-spd manual. I heard the noise after break-in period. First thought, the noise was knocking/pinging from engine but second thought it could be a tapping/clatter noise.

I heard this noise sometimes above 2500 rpm (in 4th or 5th gear under mild acceleration) or above 3000 rpm (in 2nd and 3rd gear under harder acceleration). I could not notice this before break-in period because I tried not to use high rpm.

Many people said that it could be a belt tensioner or valve noise or lifters... anyone who owned R56 MCS has same or similar experience?

------ updated
p.s. If you listen around the time of 20 ~ 25 seconds you can hear lots of the ping from that sound clip. And that is what mine sounds like too.

Can you describe the noise some more? the cold start chatter noise doesn't sound like the issue you're having.

Thanks guys,

I do not think it is a cold start rattle issue....and it is hard to explain, but I will try to explain.

I may say it is a rhythmic clicking sound (rod?). I hear a rhythmic clicking sound on mild or hard acceleration (as I mentioned above). Also the clicking sound increase as engine speed increases.

I noticed this afternoon, I can hear rhythmic clicking sound vividly outside TEMP is above 80 degree and if degree is 80 degree below the sound is much less.

Would you be able to understand it? I am thinking now do I have to visit dealer or not.

russr,

Aah...do you also hear that noise? hmm.... what type of MINI do you have? Is your MINI 2008 MCS 6-spd? and I think if I turn the AC on I can here the noise loud on warmer days (may be above 80 degree). And I burn 91 octane gas.

Today this is first time I got above 4000 rpm, may be it was 4500 rpm in 2nd gear....it was cool though

I went to test drive this morning around 6:40 am and it was 64 degree. I drove under hard acceleration. I could hear clicking sound slightly in 3rd gear over 3000 rpm, but the sounds are different ~ much much less than yesterday (over 80 degree).

On warmer day will have the clicking sounds???

spam.at.trash, I'm from the same production week as you. Don't you remember our thread in the 1st gear forum? Anyway, I've got the same 2008 MCS 6spd. I sometimes hear the noise at 3000 rpm in lower gears such as 2nd and 3rd and other times I hear it at very low RPMs...it's like some other noise. I rarely hit 4000-4500rpm, but I'll try and let u know.

I think I remember you russr

And sometimes when I drive off from green signal in 1st gear, I also heard clicking sounds (rod?) too, is that a normal for the manual trans MCS?

I don't know if it is normal or not, but I don't hear much unless I have the radio off. If you're concerned about, I suggest you take it to the dealership and ask them if it is normal. I just thought it was some other motor or something kicking in maybe because we have a turbo.

spam.at.trash, any updates on this? It's been warmer in NJ recently and I've listened for this noise and I don't think I would describe it as a clicking or tapping. To me it sounds like some other motor almost kicking in that's perhaps part of the turbo. Would you agree with this? I also feel like the noise is more obvious with the AC on, so perhaps it is a cooling fan?

russr, Thanks for the update. I would think my MCS's noise is clicking or tapping sounds from engine. And I asked Irvine MINI service manager and he said that "...It is typical of the 2007 - 2008 MINI Cooper S to have a slight rattling sound at 2500 RPM's (it is a typical of the Peugeot engine)...." he also asked me regarding loose power.

I do not think my MCS loose power, but I have heard those noise since after break-in period. So I am not trying to make that those noise to use smooth acceleration for now.

ps. During break-in period I tried not exceed 2500 rpm some reasons, so engine is not break-in well I think. I should have up to 4000 rpm instead.

russr, I tried to search many times to get similar noise clip my MCS, but no luck. And the noises what I mentioned above is not a loud, but I can hear noises when it happens. I am going to drop by the MINI service center if the things get worse - hopefully not - That said it is OK for now.

buzzsaw, thanks for the link, but I think it is not...the cold weather issue

Now I have 2600 mls and I heard pinging sounds slightly yesterday again. It was in 3rd gear under mild acceleration (maybe between 2400 and 2800 rpm) and over 90 degree outside.

I think I almost never heard the pinging sounds early morning and below 70 degree outside, so it happens only warmer days.....but not sure though.

russr, well it's more like you hit metal pipe with chop sticks continuously (or like randomly hitting an engine block with keys???) ....hope you can imagine this sound....

spam.at.trash, I suggest you take your car to the dealer and have them look at it. It's not been that warm here, but I don't think I've heard that. Also, keep in mind that when the weather is warmer, the octane of the gas needs to match what the manufacturer says to avoid pinging. So make sure you're putting in 91 and not 89 or something cuz on hot days that'll make a difference.
