SES Code P0340 & Traction light

Over the past couple of week I keep getting the SES light and the traction warning comming on. I've hooked up a reader and I'm getting a fault code that points to the camshaft sensing wiring.

Could the two be linked in some way? or have I got 2 distinct problems?

The weather has just turned from distincly Winter to Spring with a lot of standing water around. I'm still on Winter tires as the temps are getting down to minus figures at night and are stilll there when I got to work. During the day and on the way home, it's up to +10C and more.

Where do I start?

Oh, it's a 2003 MCS

Me to

Same thing here at anything below 45 or so. I don't notice any difference in performance though-How about you?

I'm running a unichip are you?

I was reading somewhere on here that it could be a sensor freakout from the steering column and there is nothing really wrong other than that.

I've also been told that it could be a burnt exhaust valve guide and that the head has to replaced. My guy says to just replace the cam sensor, but he has no explanation for the dsc.

I still think it's the unichip and it will just go away when it warms up.

carbon build up on exhaust valve

I took mine in to the mini dealer for DSC and SES light and idle problems. they did a compression check and one of the exhaust valves leaked because of carbon buildup $2000 later it runs like a dream.

carbon build up on exhaust valve

I had a full valve replacement done. It drives like having a brand new engine!

Seeing this string is a bit old, attempting to refresh with my question-- I too am having similar issues as detailed here-- ECL and traction control lights on. getting in there this afternoon to look around and see what I may find.

Question on the valve replacement-- anyone take that one themselves? if so, how long did it take? I can be without my MINI for a few days, but not much more. Second option would be taking it to Way Motor Works (the one shop I trust with bigger projects), but I am almost 2 hours away...

Thanks for any and all feedback.
