Ticking every 3 seconds from Dashboard area

I've tried to search for this, but can't find anything close to what I am hearing.

The last couple of days I've noticed a ticking noise from the dashboard area. on my 05 MCS. It ticks once about every three seconds. It's not very loud, but noticable when I don't have the radio on. It usually only happens once the car is warmed up. Very weird!!! I tired to locate it, but all I can tell is that it's coming from underneath the dashboard and it ticks with or without the radio on.

Has anyone experienced this or maybe heard of this before? I am taking her to the dealer for the flywheel noise on Monday, but this is something un-related an new to me.

I do get a tick sound from the lower part of the dash when heat or air is on. Do you still hear it when everything is turned off? If you do- I don't know.

Did you leave a watch in the glove compartment?
Probably some expansion movement from the heating system -either the metal tubes for the heater core, or some plastic ducting for the hot air distribution system.
Have you tried it with the heat off/on; ac on/off (may have to turn fan on for that). Try different combinations... and then hang upside down with your head under the dash to see if you can narrow it down.

I tired all combinations of heat and AC and the weird thing is that it disappears when I turn on the heater. It ticks when the AC is on and when nothing is on at all. Any ideas?

Couple of questions: Does it do it while the car is just sitting there idling or do you need to be driving around?
Can you narrow down where it's coming from? Upper dash? Lower? Left side or right side?

Is your oil low? My friend's Cooper made a ticking sound and it was the oil.

It's probably not your situation...but when I have my radio with the Dice iPod connection turned on and no iPod connected it clicks like you describe it.

Good luck as noises like that make me crazy...

Checked the oil level. It's fine. Not sure what it is. It's coming from the center of the dashboard and it stops if I turn on the heat. Don't want to be riding around with the heat on in Florida all the time.

We had a claimant pick up her car recently from the repair shop and she called us complaining about a ticking noise from her dash. We had her take it back to the shop so they could check it out.

The shop calls us back and says they drove the car and the problem was that her key ring dangles pretty low and her other keys were hitting the steering column as she drove the car.

Not that you could be that ditzy.

That is pretty funny, but that's not happening here. lol

It happens even when I'm at a red light or when I'm parked. The timing is perfectly spaced at about 3 seconds per click so it has to be something mechanical. Very odd!

Manual or automatic heating controls?

Could it be a little airflow door trying to open or close in response to the auto. climate control?

Might be...

It even clicks when the AC is on or if it's off completely. I'll have to see if it happens if the climate control is on automatic. I usually just run it on manual.

the speed sensitive wipers sweep across every 3 seconds when driving fast.....any relation there? (I know this happens when you are not moving but wondering if that module is fried....do your wipers work OK?)

I don't know what exactly you are hearing, but I had a regular, subdued tick coming from the dash. Turns out it was a not quite seated right cd. Apparently, whether or not the cd player is on, it spins when the car is started up. Once I ejected and reinserted the cd, no more ticking.

It seems that the ticking is gone after the dealer changed out the DMF (dual mass flywheel). I am going to keep listening for it, but it appears that that resolved the issue. I am not talking about the ratteling noise that the defective DMF made, but a ticking that was spaced out about three seconds. Weird stuff I tell you!!!
