"Popped out" hood scoop...

I have read all the threads relating to deformed/melted hood scoops on NAM but I'm still not sure if I have any reason to be concerned yet....

Last night after parking, my boyfriend just happened to walk around to the front of my car ('07 MCSa with about 3200 miles) and asked me what was wrong with my hood. Alarmed, I look at it and we notice that the hood scoop was popped out. My first thought is someone screwed with my car or maybe hit it. No damage to the rest of the car at all and I have not hit or bummed anything.

Then I notice that only the passenger side washer nozzle is weeping! This is odd since I didn't use them and it was just a slight stream from that one.

We pushed the scoop back into place but the top part of it does NOT sit flush to the car now. I can't be sure it ever fit 100% perfectly flush of course but I washed and detailed it less than a week ago and everything looked fine.

I had not run the car hard or driven it very far before noticing the scoop...so I have no idea if this is a heat related issue like others are experiencing. The bonnet was pretty darn warm but didn't seem excessive at that point.

What are people's thoughts? Do your non-deformed scoops sit perfectly flush to the rest of the car?

Infrared heat guns are about $50 and have lots of uses; measure the temp of your bonnet.
My scoop is just slightly below flush; hasn't popped in 21,000 miles so far.
I have a "holy" one, btw.

I can definitely start tracking the temp of the bonnet but I'm curious if other people's scoops actually popped/came out of place (and had to be pushed back in) due to just the heat issue.

Maybe when I had my stripes put on (2 months ago) the installer removed the scoop and didn't push it in securely? I'm just uneasy now because of the sudden weeping jet at the same time!

Not for nothing but look at the photos in your gallery, the scoop doesn't look very flush or seated in them. I took a few photos of my cooper the day I picked it up, I actually saw a ding in her in the photos that night when I went thru them. Photos are nice to provide a timeline of things.

yeah, good point. i'll have to look a bit closer at the pics, although the lighting might throw the details off. I spent a good deal of time detailing the car last weekend and the scoop looked fine and seated in as it should. It's just the top part now that seems slightly off (and sorta flexible...if that makes any sense...lol). well, not much I can do but wait and see if this happens again. getting on here and asking others just kinda helps ease my OCD worries!

I'd go to the dealer and explained what happened. At the very least it gets documented that you had this issue. Doesn't seem normal for it to just pop up. I'd also get that weeping jet fixed...dealer should know about the check valve.

I replaced the painted scoop with the chrome scoop. About 3 months after I changed it I noticed one day that the back of the scoop had popped up. I pushed it back down, but a few days later it popped up again. It's heat related. Not sure what to do, since it isn't the scoop that came on the car, although it is a genuine BMW part number.

Just curious... Where was the location of the ding? Did the car was delivered with it and you didn't notice until after the fact?

Yup delivered with it, never saw it till I looked at the photo from pickup. It was on the top of the right side quarter panel. Very subtle. Just enough to cause my eye to catch it in the photo, went out looked at the car, then I saw it. No-one else saw it till I pointed it out. When I was at the dealer later that month I mentioned it, they said oh no problem, we cover any scratches, dings, rubs for the first 90 days. They took care of it. In fact were very nice about it.

One of the guys who is near us had a problem with his chrome scoop that he ordered with his 07. The chrome towards the rear was blistering. He took it to the dealer and they replaced it, telling him it was heat related due to the turbo. He removed or cut something out of the underside to help it vent out a little better and hasnt had the problem since.

Is that like the holy hood scoop of Antioch?

Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three...

Any thoughts of whether the upgraded front intercooler would prevent overheating?

+1 that doesn't look right to me; should look flush like this:

Are those (good looking) lights heating things us I wonder? I've drilled the vent holes out in mine (July delivery came with half the vents open) and even after spirited driving the hood does not get hot. Just a thought.

Anyway it's a quick and easy swap for a new one at the dealer.
