Very faint beeping

New 08 Cooper S, Premium, cold, MFSW.

When in the car- usually just after startup, there is a >very< faint beeping noise- REALLY faint- you can't hear it when the stereo is playing.

Not sure what it is actually- but it isn't a regular beep like a steady warning chime- it sounds like the computer is going through a check list/analyzing things or something. beep beep..... beep. beep beep beep.... beep..... there's no regularity to the beeping.

Anyone else notice this- or am I the only new Mini owner who's car talks to him? (Unfortunately in a language I don't understand.)

SA didn't understand it either.

It's not even loud enough to be annoying- just curious if it is just my car.

All MINIs have an ice warning if the outside temp. falls below 37 degrees. It's just on startup, lasts a few seconds and is accompanied by the temperature flashing above the tach - if the temp is what is currently on display there. I don't know where you're located, but that's probably it if some mornings you start out and it's below 37.

No- that isn't it. Ice warning has an icon that shows up and is a regular chime. This doesn't have any icons associated with it- no warning icon shows up anywhere, and it's an irregular beep- not steady.

This is also >much< fainter than any of the warning chimes I've heard.

If it's the same noise I've heard after turning the engine off, and keeping the stereo muted, it's one of the drives spinning a disc around. Apparently it's been driving my wife crazy and she never brought it up until recently

Do you have the NAV system? I have it and it makes the exact noise you've described. I think it's the system reading the DVD, and it makes absolutely no sense for it to be running when it does. It runs even after I shut off the engine, when I open a door, and even when the key isn't in the ignition. WTF?

I've had this problem too- waking up a 2AM... Was that a beep? Nah, I'll just go back to sleep... Wait, was that a beep? Nah, I'll just... etc, etc.

I think it's the Nav in my case too, but I didn't want to assume that it couldn't happen from the CD drive also. The point of it running as soon as possible (eg. when the doors unlock) is to minimize the apparent startup time for the system and load times of nav data. I'd guess that once the car is off it also tries to cache some data off the disc or something similar.

Hm. No NAV, but it's interesting that yours is making a beeping also. It definitely isn't my cell phone. I just tried to narrow it down to something, but it didn't beep this time. (It's more of a "boop" actually) Like a VERY faint "Gong" (I guess that's what mini calls the alert sound)

Anyway- not really annoying- just puzzling.

  1. Be parked, idling.
  2. Open your windows.
  3. Try to determine if the sound is coming from inside the cabin or outside.
  4. Pull the hood release.
  5. Exit the vehicle
  6. Raise the hood.
  7. Listen under hood, see if you can determine if the sound is coming from under the hood.
  8. If the sound appears to be somewhere near the firewall, stick your head in the open windows on both sides and try to determine which side of the firewall (in or out) and which side of the car (driver or passenger).
  9. Drive car to dealer, let them listen.

Actually, I have been wondering about this for many months. I'm used to it now.

At times I hear it, then I do not. I do not have NAV.

Very faint, very high pitch, short little beep.

If anyone really knows, perhaps they can chime in.

It looks like some other people are hearing it also in this thread- so I'll just chalk it up as one of the little quirks of this cool car.

Thanks for the input-

Yeah- it's definitely not the actual Gong- but it's that quality of sound- just really faint.

Anyway- dealer heard it and had no idea either. (unless just playing dumb) Not a big deal.

+1. I've noticed that, too. Glad I am not the only one.

I also have the faint, high-pitched beeping sound in my Mini. It goes away when I turn off the climate control fan. Is it possibly a belt that needs adjusting?

I've figured out that it is indeed tied to the Automatic Climate Control System- it makes a beepping when it is changing the fan speed automatically etc etc.

Just it's way of saying that it is doing something I suppose. Or some electronic leakage or something.

39. Girlfriend hears it too. Again, not loud enough to be annoying, just funny.

I have the same noise. I just heard it this morning at a red light with no radio. I think it's associated with the climate controls. I turned off the A/C and it stopped. When I turned it back on, the beeps started again.

Maybe it's some electronic device trying to adjust the cabin tempurature to what you indicate on the display?

That's the only guess I have...

I'm don't know why it's beeping, but I'm positive that it has something to do with the climate controls.

BTW, I do have the automatic climate controls...
