... and here's a "to rebuild or to walk away" dilemma...

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ini-motor.html

Hydro-locked, not worn out by the way. Rotton misfortune.

I have an 03S with ~88k miles. The only thing I have done so far is upgrade from Mobil1 synthetic oil to Royal Purple, Put RedLine transmission oil in, K&N air filter, kept the NGK1 plugs and have Cobalt plug wires. I drive 180ish miles round trip through a desert (which 105 degree's F.) and get ~38mpg to work and 40ish on the way home. That's driving 70mph at 3k rpm, cruise control. It seems that this is the "sweet spot" as far as mpg goes for me.
I have been looking at ways to improve my edge without harming the engine. The last thing I want is a dead Mini in a desert I have found this site and am thinking about getting one (http://www.dashdaq.com/features/gauges.htm). Anyone hear of it? Any thoughts?

Oh...forget to add that I bought it in 08. The dealer (in Tempe) I purchased it from tried to sell me a Mini Lemon. They called the LOUD sucking noise coming from the engine "an intake leak" and they would fix it. So I bought it. Their chewing gum didn't help the "leak", so I took it to the Mini dealer in Scottsdale (lucky I had a warranty purchased). Turns out it was the supercharger going "out" and that it was ready to implode. The dealer I bought it from got irate (literally) when the Mini dealer told them that they "HAD to" let them fix it because they have "special tools" only available to Mini dealers. So, hesitantly the Tempe dealer had it fixed. So I have a new supercharger on my 03S. Gotta love those guys in Scottsdale.

it seems like the Mini is a little sluggish coming out of a red light but when it gets going, its a bullet. Any thoughts on why this might be happening? After I took it to the dealer in 08, it was REALLY responsive. Especially coming out of a red light.
Now after many many miles, its sluggish. Is there some "secret" adjustment that they did? I say "secret" because whatever they do to my car or my girlfriends 03 MC (which isn't much - tune up) they give a general response. Nothing elaborate or revealing.

I like this thread. My cars have to be my daily drivers, I don't have the luxury of a "fun" car only "fun" motorcycles and other stuff.

With that said... Mini is on the line here, up to now I've been a die hard Honda driver for daily commute, kid commute, house stuff, etc, if over the next three years this car proves to be reliable and get me and my family where we want to go without a glitch, I'm happy.

UPDATE: 2004 MCS

Mine just rolled over 140,000 and 150k should be here by April/May.

So far the only things wrong not under warranty have been the
Heater Core - 133k
Yet another windshield
Motor mount 125k
The boot sensor still sucks and works at random.
EDIT: as of the new year the exhaust manifold cracked after the pre-cat

I wimped out at 124,224 miles and traded my '04 DS/Blk MCS...but I traded it for a '10 HB/Blk JCW Clubman S! Growing kids and my love of sharing motoring with others made me make the jump. The old boy had the original clutch (never slipped, but shudder sometimes off the line first thing in the morning), original shocks (still tighter than...well, it was tight...), original S/C, pretty much everything but tires, brake pads and a radiator!

Though I feel bad about orphaning my first MINI, I'm glad to keep up the motoring tradition!

Motor OnOn!

Just rolled past 70K on a road trip from MA to FL in my early '04 MCS. No issues in the last 10,000 miles except a burned out headlight. Planning to cruise WELL into 100K+ territory!

I'm repeating this here - and vote for an easy-to-find high mileage thread -
because I've never found it easy to find or return to topics in North American Motoring.

My 2002 MC turned "8" two days ago and its odometer hit 380,000 miles.
I didn't take a picture of that, but if you go to www.MINI2.com and the long thread "Who's Driven The Most Miles?" you'll find a pretty detailed account of this MINI's history - and a few pictures of me at 84, and the car's odometer to at least 371,000 miles a few months ago.

If that MINI2 link didn't work. Try this one:

Update: Now at 153,200 miles. Note however that I put a works crate motor in him last winter before tackling the SCCA Nationals. The old motor was running fine and returning good mileage, but I had the chance and took it.

The new motor and SC now have about 25k miles - still the original Getrag 6 speed, and not a hint of trouble.

Are you on the original LCA bushings at that mileage? If so that is pretty darned good. Congrats on 175K.

I just turned 90K, but that is nothing compared to some of you guys.

Super late reply...sorry.

I am now at 191500.

Just replaced the front pads and my 3rd windshield. I said I was going to install those LCA bushings but I didn't. I'll tackle that in the spring. Other mods in the last 15,000 are a stratmosphere header and a whalen e-brake (added 42hp...j/k).

Nice to see new traffic in this old thread...

I cannot post here any more, as after 9 years and almost 200k miles Gollum found a new home, and the successor has only 3,200 miles at present.

Cheers,

Charlie
