Is it possible to put DSC or ASC on a cooper that didn't get them in teh first place adn woudl it cost a lot more? anybody know? I was think it might be a nice thing. I originally did it to save money, I'd never had a car with that system on it before so I didn't care, but after listening to a show about it I think it might kind of nice to have it around. any thoughts? I know the DSC is a brake control thing so wouldn't it just be a computer flash?

I doubt that anyone will have a fully authoritative answer, but simple common sense says NO. First, it's not just a "computer flash" thing nor just a brake control thing. No doubt the DSC uses a variety of different sensors at the wheels as well as some stability (the "S" in DSC) sensors that are NOT at the wheels. By the time you retrofitted all of that you'd be talking a lot more than the option would have cost to begin with.

Also remember that while ALL MINIS (except maybe the MINI One?) have traction control, DSC is a whole lot more than traction control. If you want DSC, best to put it on your wish-list for your next MINI. I personally think it's a valuable feature (as opposed to the implementation of of the traction control, which I think stinks), but not worth the hassle - -if it's even possible at all -- of retrofitting.

---> jsun; sorry to correct, but you're almost right.

The MCS comes with ASC, however the Cooper does not. All MINI's do, however, come standard with CBC, ABS, and EBD.

(my theory):
I'm confident that retrofit of DSC is possible, however cost prohibitive. Additional sensors than the stock 4 wheel-speed sensors include the two yaw/pitch/roll sensors, steering angle sensor, and a new ECU perhaps.

Thanks for the correction You raise another interesting point though, and that's that maybe the Cooper comes with an entirely (even somewhat) different DME (aka ECU). Do you -- or does anyone here -- know if this is a fact?
