Airbag light comes on when a passenger is in the car

2004 mini

The last two times my girlfriend has rode with me my airbag light has come on. The first time it was on and off intermittedly and the second time (yesterday) it stayed on the entire time we were driving. It's never come on before this.

The only change to the car that could have affected it would be the addtion of a carbon fiber dash that she surprised me with at christmas, which required some work with the air bag. I was careful when working around it, and was sure everything went back on correctly.

Did I knock something loose when I did that? or is there another issue I need to address? The light itself doesn't bother me; it's the fact the air bag might not work if it's called into action. It will only come on if someone is riding in the passenger seat (i don't know about the back seats... no one can sit there with the harnesses, anyway). When I'm bymyself, it won't come on.

I'll be working on the car tomorrow installing a r56 shift light and would want to check things out then.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dark .Your going have to bring it to the dealer. The Occupancy sensor that
is inside the pass seat cushion is faulty or wiring problem. Most likely its the
sensor thats faulty. You have to replaced the entire seat cushion and reprogram the new sensor thats built into the cushion.

hope this helps

Thanks for the tip. Would the airbag still go off in a accident? If it still works then I will live with it; don't have a passenger on a regular basis and the dealer is 3 hours away.

Couldthere be a loose plug underneath the seat that I could check? I know it's recently been moved all the way forward and all the way back for working on the dash and hauling a aero kit to a body shop.

From: Washington. No, the other one.
Early Minis (not sure of the years) had a problem with the connector under the seat comming loose if the seat was moved to maximum travel. You might check to see if it's pulled open a little.

Thanks, i'll check that out. It has gone to maximum travel recently and was my second throught after the possibility that I jerked something when I put the new dash in.. Does it require removing the seat to get to it, or can you reach the plug with the seat in there?

So the '04 MINIs do have a sensor in the passenger seat? I thought I read somewhere that they didn't, only the later models. I have been having the same problem lately, the light will come on, then go off after a while, even when the seat is empty. This past weekend when we got in the car to go for a drive it was on, I asked my girlfriend to jump up & down while she was in the seat & it turned off.
