Not to sound too naive, but (especially in light of problems I've read over on the Stumble thread), are ECU upgrades mandatory when you take your car in for service? My MCS runs just fine. I'm at 6K miles at this time. Any advice????

I would say if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. And I would tell the service department that when I took the car in for service.

I had one ECU update in September of 2002 to fix cold start and haven't had any reason to get another update. I'm with Jerry on this, don't bother unless you have a problem that is ECU related.

Do it as needed. I think it's been mentioned that the ECU will only take so many upgrades. If true, no need to waste one when it's not needed.

^ You know, I saw that "only so many upgrades" post too...and wondered about it. Is that true? If so, then no one at MINI service has ever mentioned it to me (I've had 2 upgrades and am waiting for the stumble fix to get a 3rd). Also, what about people who are doing the EVOtech ECU thing...do those uploads count?

Unless I hear convincing arguments to the contrary, I'm thinking that this limited number of upgrades thing is hooey. I mean, it's just flash ROM, right? It doesn't exactly wear out...

No and I don't want an update because I don't have stumble in my MCS and I don't want to start getting it.
